Slow Friday, I guess the covid shortened week appears to have infiltrated the transfer window too.

Chris Richard’s from Bayern is a done deal £10m plus add-ons 5yr deal.

AWB could be set for loan deal to Palace with obligation to buy next year for £20m

Thanks Dazza, that would be great progress, any more midfielders likely to come in to complete our business?

Ouch. A player now completely on the outs and they are looking for a guaranteed £20m. Maybe £5m but even so I don't think he fits the system. If we are actively looking to sign quality centre-backs then we are probably going for three at the back. I can't see AWB as a wing-back although I suppose he could cover that and the right sided of a back 3

Maybe the 3 at the back is a formation that we will use occasionally or a plan that we would like to try / progress to but aren't 100% convinced that we can do it (See Frank De Boer)
So having a squad that is flexible to consider various formations would be an advantage - AWB is still a good player & if we can bring that out of him again its a good investment.

The problem I have with AWB is that he has never played under Vieira. He was brought through by Roy in a very defence minded setup, so his best qualities in defending were what was required. Now we are looking to progress to a more attack minded formation I don't think he is the right person.
I know that he was originally a winger, but you have to ask why didn't he progress his career as a winger? Was it that he ultimately wasn't good enough in this position? If that is the case, I can't see him being required in Vieira's system.

I would be very surprised if we signed Richards and still went for AWB, given we extended Clyne.
Any news on Colvill or another midfielder?

Whilst I can see where your coming from I would point out that 2 of AWB best qualities were that he was fast & his tackling during tracking back was first class - now it could be argued that if some of his positional play was better he wouldn't have needed to rely quite so much on last ditch defending but the fact remains that he was good at it -

Our game is of a higher tempo now & we set up differently but I still believe there is a place for AWB in our squad, especially when injuries & suspensions are factored into the equation.

I would be happy with both To be honest if we are serious regarding the signings of Richards and AWB. There are suggestions, hearsay that PV is going to play a different format 3 at back. As we all know under Hodgson oldest and smallest squad in the league. I think we are building to rotate more and aim for that top ten finish and European place.

AWB got a lot of stick last season, but the whole United defence was in disarray and he is not a leader. Alongside a more organised defence he would quickly get back to his best, but I'm just not sure Palace are in a place where they are ready to pay £20m for a full-back yet, but who knows. Personally I think AWB is better suited to a family club like ours where people actually care more about each other than their Instagram accounts. Also, AWB is as good as any of our current full-backs in terms of attacking play, even if he is not good enough going forward for a team like United.
