Indeed and I think two things in particular would have swayed people who were uncertain which way to go.

Milliband saying Labour did not overspend (whatever the "facts" are it made him look stupid)

Unbelievably depressing. Even as someone who didn't vote, I can appreciate how terrible a Tory/UKIP/DUP coalition would be.

I might have to take up smoking again.

You have no grounds to complain if you did t vote.

Why, do you think my vote could've swayed it?

I don't see how you can argue outcome if you don't participate.

You chose to opt out and then bemoan the result.

I spoiled my ballot paper in a safe seat, which I think is just as actively participant as voting for someone who clearly won't win.

How are you coping with UKIP's failure?

Good for you!

I'm coping lovely..... my large portfolio of banking shares are up about 7% today thank you. UKIP were only ever going to get 2/3 seats at most.

I'm still smiling about Ed Balls and Vince Cable losing their seats Hahaha

I'll be staying up for 3 reasons...

1. Somebody broke into my summerhouse on Monday night and nicked my Cider/Wine and I'm ready with a baseball bat if the little fcuker returns.

2. I want to be one of the first to see Nick Clegg lose his seat.

3. Sophie Raworth is hosting the coverage.... Grllllll!

Summerhouse? I thought you lived in a stable environment.

EFA

I do now!

I think I am now officially an opponent of FPTP.

1. Voting in a 20 year old student over a former foreign secretary makes a joke of the constituency link.

2. UKIP gets 10% of the vote but only 1 seat.

It is untenable.

Er we had a plebiscite on this in 2011 and a two thirds majority voted for no change.

Well I for one have changed my mind. I used to like FPTP.

If we had a referendum tomorrow - on PR, AV is not good enough - then I would support it.

Greens and UKIP get over 20% of the vote between them. 2 seats out of 650.

The Essenpee get a quarter as many votes but 55 seats.

It's untenable.

If Green and UKIP did get 20% as you say (seems slightly higher than the figures I saw earlier) then that still means that ~80% voted for Conservatives, Labour and SNP - most of which would vote to keep FPTP if we have a referendum?

As of 9.45am:

UKIP votes: 3,765,863 (12.6%)
Green votes: 1,121,363 (3.7%)

Total: 4,887,226 (16.3%)

Hell will freeze over before Cameron lets any discussion of PR get anywhere so it's probably pointless to even discuss it.

PR never suits the mainstream, well supported, which I guess after the ass raping Labour got in Scotland now means it the just the Tories who would rail against it.

and the SNP...

I don't like the idea of a national list of people for each party and then you get elected by going down the list in order depending on proportion of the national vote. The final step in the precise identity of and your liking/disliking for the individual representing you going down the plughole.I went to my local MP a few years ago about something.Someone I was vehemently opposed to politically. To be fair,he really put himself out and at no time enquired about my political preferences.

But,I think Single Transferable Vote within constituencies would be good and would change the existing picture somewhat.Plenty of Tory,Labour and SNP seats would likely have had a different outcome under that scenario, far more reflective of general sentiment within a constituency. The idea of voting for what you don't want is as legitimate as voting for what you do want.

Realistically any Proportional representation system would need to be by country (ie Scotland, Wales and NI are separate election with the current number of seats up for grabs) - Otherwise the DUP, Sinn Fein, Plyd Cumonme, SNP etc will all cease to exist. At least two of those being unrepresented in government would result in terrorism and armed conflict.

It could also be grounds to establish an English parliament, with the UK Parliament being comprised based on representation from each country (for UK matters only, with Scotland, England, Wales and NI essentially being established as independent nations for regional purposes).

Not sure how you'd establish a national government though based on those (presumably by majority).

You are spot on Boyo...

If Labour had got shot of the two "D1ck-Eds" as their commander's in chief and gone with Andy Burnham and/or Chuka Umunna they would have been more credible as a party and the public might have taken to them.

Those two really were the chuckle brothers and Labour shot itself in the foot persevering with them to lead the campaign.

So ideally suited to modern politics.

The cop out.

I think its clear that they are the third biggest party now, in terms of support.

4.5m voters. Very impressive. This will mean that the Tories will continue to adopt their policies to keep their supporters and their own happy. It is disappointing the number of seats but as a result of the failure of the voting system.

The losers of this election are the left. I can cope with that
