Excellent article, dead on. I must admit I chuckled at "the British are a reincarnation of the Nazis. Only with less reliable trains."... very Alan Partridge!

It's true in my experience, I've been around the world a lot -- lived half my life abroad, including in Germany -- and this is the least racist country I've been to, anywhere.

Still, it's not perfect... and the worst part is that we're not far off from experiencing what Belgium is now. Denmark, Holland, Austria... they've all had the same recently. It would be complacent to think it can't happen here, even with our fabled tolerance.

I think, above all, that's where I stand on this. I have strong feelings about a lot of things (as you know Pete!) but for me, the worst thing, the biggest danger, is fascism. That's why I rant in the way I do. And I won't stop, ever. We / I cannot EVER afford to stop being vigilant.

This is a thread that restores my faith in HOL, which has of late been getting a bit silly with OF&H songs, Dave Lee, and so on.

And may I personally add what a pleasure it is to engage in intelligent debate on a contentious subject with people like yourself, Slug, old chap. And Pete, thanks for having the courage to raise the topic in the first place.

Wife beating may be socially acceptable in Sheffield, but it is a different matter in Cheltenham

Very good article from the times there.

It's true that in comparison to the Italians or the French we're living in racial harmony, but the fact that we're better than most of Europe doesn't make everything rosy. That's like saying (I'm making an extreme comparison here) "I've killed 10 people but it's okay he's killed 20, he's much worse."

I don't consider myself racist, I don't consider anyone else who's posted here a racist either but I do think there are too many problems in the country to do with race issues for us to sit back and be pleased with ourselves for our tolerance.

Very good thread Pete, raised controversial issues without starting an argument. Well done everyone else for keeping it that way.

Whereever there is difference and this difference cannot be understood, it is seen as a threat.
So long as those that are narrow minded see it as this, Racism will exist.
Having been to most of Europe and seen how it is, the UK is not too bad.....however whenever there is a high concentration of an ethnic minority there is always a perceived threat to the existing culture that is there.
Such action and reaction leads to the issues we have seen in Manchester and Oldham and formerly in Handsworth.

Racism can come in many forms, but above all a lack of tolerance and a lack of respect generally for life, which seems to be on the increase in the last 5-10 years is leading to a rise in less tolerant attitudes. This must be changed.

Sorry to Butt in but is sounded like a good topic!

I'm not having a go here, but it strikes me as a bit rich an Irishman telling us that we should harbour more tolerance! When Catholics and Protestants embrace and show tolerance to each other, fair enough, and when Cork or Dublin become predominantly Asian cities and you have tens-of-thousands of so-called ‘asylum-seekers’ flooding across the Irish sea week in week out, come back and repeat your post and I’ll take it a little more serious. Don’t get me wrong, I love the Irish, but in my experience, on the whole, tolerant you aint!

Yeah, understandable Slugs, but that's why I believe people like your good self need to re-think and re-address the issues, I mean it seems obvious to me that people are being 'pushed' into a right-wing corner because of the situations we've all mentioned here. If politicians started to get real, and if the people of the left dropped their endless accusations and Brit-bashing diatribe, maybe, just maybe, the good people of Britain will start to feel safe again in their own land! I mean, people don't start to vote for the BMP because they suddenly become facists, they do it out of despair and desperation! They feel that the self-serving vote-hungry main-steam politicians have let them down and hung them out to dry!

Just driven through that part of town in order to take my son home from his grandma.

I don't know, but it doesn't look pretty and it has nothing to do with the murder anymore ... just with frustrated little kids trying to ruin any peace left.

Anyway, me and slug have a different view on life but I can say I absolutely respect this guy, in my eyes a top bloke and I'm looking forward in drinking a pint with him again next time I see him (Millwall ?). And I agree, haven't been too fond of HOL lately due to the amount of silly posts on here and very stupid people about. This thread has restored my faith a bit.

Thanks for this guys. NOW BIG UP DA OBC AND PTM

Ah but wasn't it fact that Simmons was a member of Combat 18?

Quote Selhurst Stallion at 28 Nov 2002 12:32pm

At the end of the day the Cantona / Simmons incident had nothing to do with Cantona's nationality but the fact that he played for Man Utd and was notrious for being an arrogant, petulant and dirty player who everyone loved to hate. The same for Keane now. If the word "french" or "france" came out of Simmons' gob it was purely because the heat of the moment situation and not because he hates the French.

Selhurst Stallion is spot on here. The Sun added extra cr@p such as Combat 18 to make Simmons sound worse than what he was, also bringing out a story of him holding up a garage with a spanner from years beforehand. Then the following week after giving him a few quid, carried his full exclusive story of the Cantona incident. Goes to show how twisted newspapers are and how they continually stir things up. The public love it though, that's why millions of copies are sold each day.
