This is quite a funny thread. Either people are being really honest in their views or on a total wind up!

Some of what you say makes sense on a practical basis. I agree that theoretically there should be a ban on further immigration into the UK for the time being, but purely on the grounds that there isn't enough room here. The latest government strategy of turning large areas of green belt land into huge housing estates (but without thinking of how the transport, education, health and environmental infrastructure will cope) is not only a bad idea, it also demonstrates that this country is already heaving with people in an area that simply can't accommodate them.

But, as a 'civilised' nation and one that is respected by most other countries, we simply cannot close our doors when there are genuine refugees needing shelter. I agree that there are other migrants who are trying to better their standard of living, as well as those other immigrants (legal or illegal) who come here simply for the handouts. I think it's time that we shouldn't allow these classes of people entry into the UK unless they can prove they have a particular skill that we are lacking and that their presence here will enhance the general good.

Having said that, Jonsey, most of your post is a load of garbage. Where is the evidence for what you're saying?

it just shows how f***ing stupid this goverment is. They are using historic sites or parts of british culture for homes for people from other coutries.

We are well an truley f***ed if blair gets 4 more years cos it means all schools will be useless with no one getting an education and then universities will have alot less people going cos of top up fees. Then the country will be totally full and we will be at war with north korea.

maybe this thread isnt such a good idea as people are likely to get offended with others views

isnt that a good thing?? having other views?? or shall we all sit in silence??

if people get offended with someones posts so what, everyone is entitled to there opinion and allowed to put there opinion across. its called freedom of speech {or posting as the case may be} but i forgot were not allowed to do that in this country anymore we might offend people

it doesnt bother me at all i totally agree with your view points, there isnt enough room in this country as it is let alone more!! and i also agree with the view that everyones intitled to there view points!!

don't the aussies catch them and then send them to a little s***ty island with no bog roll untill they are ready to send them back.

We should send them all to Ireland and not give them food. then hopefully they will eat each other...

or

as i realise some people do have a reason for coming into the country (parents eaten by wild buffalo etc) they should have to pass a test before entering. i.e dodge a speeding bullet and your in.

Oh dear, oh dear. Here we go again.

I, to be fair, have no wish to trawl through massive extensive spiels by inherently introspective and reactionist posters.

Still I will say what I have to say, and what will come of it will come.

The whole argument about immigration tends to be based on two specific themes. One says, look at what they are doing, they are wiping out our national culture! They are stealing our jobs! They are smelly! They eat weird food! They have funny hair! They speak other languages! This will destroy our country!

The second says: There is no space! They are leaching off our benefits! They are stealing our land?

Both a load of hysterical bollocks, to be frank.

Firstly, Culture has never been and never will be a static and uncchaning thing. 'Culture' in the broadest meaning of the term has always been a thing in transition. People seek to cling on to some fabled ideals when the rate of change is speeded up, but these things are the result of peoples misunderstanding of what constitutes their identity, and rely to much on seeking to belong to a group rather than happy in who they are as individuals and judging others as individuals, not by religion, colour or any propagated aspect of 'culture'.

With regard to the seocnd, it is well known, although not well reported in right wing press outlets such as the Mail, that there is a skills shortage in this country. Similarly, there is also an ageing population, and a top heavy population pyramid. The result is we need more people, not less, for the reason that they contribute to taxation, and provide necessary skills.

The arrival of people from all over the world has made this country a more interesting place in which to live, and without more the country will fast become a nation of pernsioners and a stressed out middle aged working class.

As far as I'm concerned, immigrants bring with them different cultures, different religions and different ways of life. If they adapt to an English way of life, then fair play, but if they continue as they lived in their previous countries but in our country there will be trouble...

A lot of people seem to want anyone coming to this country to have a complete personality transplant and forget everything to do with their culture and heritage.
Can you honestly say that you would do that if you went to another country?
Wherever I am in the world, even I was living there, I would still be British and wouldn't want to have to completely change myself.
