Ask yourself this. Would a traveller/gipsie/pikey be offended if you called him or her a pikey?

Of course they wouldn't. That makes it right to call them it.

It's not like you're calling a black person a nigga or Asian person a p.aki, is it? The word pikey is not offensive!

In my Chambers Concise English dictionary, the word Pikey does not even exist!

It's funny how the do-gooding PC Brigade get offended about things that have got nothing to do with them.

i have romany gypsy roots which doesn't make me or my family thieves or peg sellers, luckily it makes me a gorgeous shade of brown and my ancestors decent, hard working blacksmiths from the isle of sark. so anyone who tars my heritage with the same brush as 'pikey travellers' is an ignorant t***. learn the difference please.

But your ancestors wouldn't think of themselves as a different race to us would they Bex?

It was my dream to play for Palace and to make my debut. I've always played for the club so if I'm playing here, I wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

I've got to say that I'm shocked by the vehement prejudice being shown to travellers by posts on the Charlton match. Have a go at Charlton thugs, sure ... and at the Palace thugs who attacked a Turkish restaurant in Croydon not so long ago ... but have you got some secret radar that tells you that the guy in the boots is a traveller? Have you any idea how low the probability is of a Charlton fan being a traveller?

And so what anyway? Would you throw the same abuse at "pakkies", "******s" or "paddies". If so, I'd say get off this site and out of Selhurst. If not, what's the difference? This is just another ignorant prejudice.

One of the reasons I support Palace - and take my son along - is cos it's a relaxed and mixed crowd, and cos I've not seen any racism shown to players. Racism is racism, whether it's to Asians, Afro-carribeans or travellers.

This is the original post. And straight from here its been blown way outta proportion. Charlton/Gillingham - pikies, Millwall - chavs, Anywhere up north - northern b******s, Everton/Liverpool - theiving scousers.... I could go on. This stereotyping comes part and parcel with the game of football. Surely its just a bit of banter from the fans?!

and for the record, i don't find the word 'pikey' offensive, i just find the ignorance of thinking all gypsys are pikeys intensely annoying. i know the difference - it's not hard!

Yeah, watch out you lot.Don`t underestimate the powers that some people can conjure up from the earth`s core.

The only thing that can protect you is to show them a signed photo of Alan Hansen and they go all gooey, like the witch in "The Wizard of Oz".

I hope you don't put a curse on me Bexter. Yes, you are a nice shade of brown having briefly seen you before Superfly scared you off! Shame you couldn't stay!

Years and years ago, there may have been a difference between gypsies and pikeys due to the way people earned a living and possibly moved around to do so. There is rarely such a thing as a goldsmith, blacksmith or iron-monger anymore. Times have changed and I don't think the majority of this board have ever seen the sort of travellers your ancestors were in today's society. I'm not sure they exist.

People make judgements from experience and if people had bumped into decent travellers, then they would say it on here. However, it seems that pikeys are in are nighbourhoods and according to everyone who has had the misfortune of bumping into them, they are not very nice. People like Seth admit they are not nice, but still forgives. And that's so nice of him.

I'm glad you don't find the word pikey offensive because a) you're not one and b) neither were your family. I would semi understand if you were offended, so why do the PC people get so worked up about it when they have no links with the travelling sort or more than likely have ever met a decent pikey??

I'm half Irish, my mum's family are unusually dark skinned and must have Spanish or dare I say it traveller ancestry. I don't know. If someone called me a pikey or Paddy, I don't give a s*** because I am English and proud. That's why I can't understand how you've been mildly bothered when we've had these discussions in the past.

i get 'mildly bothered' because my mum - who is even more closely related to gypsys, gets offended, even though i think i have finally explained the difference to her between pikeys and gypsys, then i come on here and some don't seem to have acquired that knowledge. i am english and proud beyond belief, i am also very proud of my roots and will defend them always, as anyone should.
