And this has been the story of England since the 80s Maybe at the moment, but I could see Mainoo and Wharton making a superb partnership which does exactly that in two years. As big an issue this time around was the movement from the forwards. At times I felt a bit sorry for Rice and TAA in particular: they had very few options and got closed down.

He did well, to say otherwise isn't a fair reflection, when compared to some of the s***e mangers before him.

GS is a nice bloke. His players like him. I’m not sure great managers are particularly nice. GS has never assembled a “great” team. In this last competition he played men out of position all over the park. Repeatedly our back four passed it amongst themselves and the keeper because men weren't finding space or were hiding. we led the tournament on back passes by a mile.
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |

The teams who we got beaten by in 2 finals and a semi.

It's been posted before but, once more, England lost 3 out of 7 matches at the 2018 World Cup. But you've completely missed my point - you think after that tournament I was sitting there thinking OMG we didnt beat beligum in 2 dead rubbers. Diers Penalty against Colombia was one of the best non Palace moments I have had watching a football match - after the pain of watching england lose countless penalty shoot outs. Yes in the trophy winning moments he failed with his tactics game management, I am not disputing that one bit. Yes Gareth will get laboured with 'we always had the easy side of the draw' But in both euros we won our groups - something we failed to do in the previous euros and world cup groups - as they say you make your own luck by winning the groups! But what he gave most of us, was something that 99% of England fans had never experienced before. We were penalties away from a trophy, and sunday we went into the 86th minute with the game on a knife edge and still having that hope of actually winning something! Even in 2022 we had the reigning world champions on the ropes (and kane missing the penalty essentially lost us the game) Yes, he didnt get us across the line, but as a palace fan (we have never won a trophy and only 2016 in my lifetime did we come close) - Yet we have felt that as england fans within the last 5/6 years twice if not 3 times after pretty much 50 years of mediocrity He has actually put us back on a pedestal that we always thought we were on but probably never were. Maybe as a palace fan i've just learnt that the moments we create on the pitch are the memories - doesnt always have to be a trophy, and in our case, more often than not it isnt.

Trophies are over rated anyways

The facts are, He had the best squad in the tournament but played many of the wrong ones. If a manager keeps picking players who refuse to perform (even if they have been brilliant before) he should be sacked and those players never seen again. I feel that he did a great job behind the scenes arranging the best facilities and accommodation for the players but held them back when it came to the football.
