Total and utter hogwash, there is not a scintilla of truth in your accusation.Suffice to say you suffer from the material disadvantage of being wrong.

The aged gentleman in question was from "Oop North" with a stentorian voice and these incidents occurred in the 70s.
It is the model of plausibility that the phrase which used to raise my hackles was prevalent in his 'Neck of the woods'.

it's not a figment of your imagination - which got me thinking the word figment is only ever used in this phrase, I think there are more examples of this

You made that up.

Who invents a fictitious phrase made by an imaginary person just to annoy themselves?

I just shipped you the book. You owe me about 8 quid. Enjoy

You hear of plenty of people being overwhelmed.

You hear of plenty of people being underwhelmed.

Not once have I ever heard of someone being whelmed. In fact, I'd love to meet someone when they were in the process of being whelmed.

Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry.

It would be quite gusting and very gruntling.

I've read it many times in books, but I admit I've never heard it spoken. But then there are thousands of English words that exist in dictionaries but are never uttered. Except by Suzie Dent.

Or Willo.

At a Conservative function after the 2019 General Election victory, I was introduced to the gathering as the "Sesquipedalian..." by a well-heeled gentleman who broke into a smile.

I was 'Au Fait' with the meaning, however there were some who looked on somewhat quizzically !

Monkey, I’m with you on the ‘get’ thing. Idiots.
Also people who start their sentences with ‘so’.
People who end their sentences with ‘right?’
Over use and inappropriate use of ‘like’.
“I was like, he was like, they were like”
Like what??????

That also irritates me, but a friend pointed out to me many years ago that most of us frequently start our sentences during conversation with "well". I started looking out for it, realised I was as bad as anyone and tried to stop doing it. Gave up.
