How about Govt Employees going into Money Purchase Schemes (ie away from Defined Benefit Pensions). That is what the majority of employees who are in private companies have had imposed on them over the past 10/15 years. Gold plated, inflation linked pensions are a massive drain on the public purse. I get that historically many in public service were deemed to be paid less than in the commercial world but this has changed significantly in recent years.

Starmer drags the English football team into the Euro's semi's. Getting us into the EU by the back door. Totally neglecting, Scotland, Wales and NI.

If it were true then I wonder whether they will look at public sector pensions?

The electorate were warned. Genuine question Willo. We have just lived through the worst government in a generation. Yet 7 million people STILL voted for those who had so negligently mismanaged. Thus... What would it take to lose your vote? Do they have to slaughter the first born? Obviously I do not like Reform but I understand the shift from Tory to them. What I don't understand are the millions who stayed in the face of overwhelming reasons to leave or abstain.

Evidence that pay in the public sector has closed on the private. Perhaps you are referring to the massive lower paid sector where us drones are facing zero hours and so on? The middle and upper jobs are hugely better paid in the private sector.

And would you means-test other public sector provision? The health service for example or perhaps refuse collection?

The health service for example or perhaps refuse collection? This is what I asked prior. This could be the thin end as if a precedent is set it will snowball. Clearly if I were a comfortably off millionaire then great yes I won’t need 900 a month. The problem is that if the test is in relation to say property value it would only be owners who could be checked. State and private renters are not checkable unless our bank accounts are opened up or our private pension pots are used. Even with all of this personal info surely it’s your outgoings which determine how much you have to live for a month!

My question was somewhat more basic towards someone who proudly stated that means-testing of the state pension is a good idea. So presumably he's thought about it and has a view on who should and who shouldn't receive the state pension. I mean surely he's not just a bitter leftie who can't abide people who are better of than he is. Edited by YT (07 Jul 2024 9.56am)
