I'm beginning to think I don't want to see our players ruined by forcing them into this Hodgsonesque nightmare of an England team and 'strategy'.

Of course, I still want England to win the thing, but increasingly I just want our guys to come back uninjured.

Like wise I am having similar feelings.

Southgate is lost tactically and always has been. He lifted the national team initially and enabled the players to enjoy it again but he has been found out long ago.

I read a good comment on TAA, of course he is not a midfielder but one thing he is good at his finding runners at Liverpool, Dias, salah etc. England only had saka against denmark. He then takes TAA and bring on Bowen and Watkins …….surely it should be then that we use TAA with them. Says a lot

This team is crying out for Wharton but without balance to the team even Wharton will struggle to lift them. Like watching palace under Hodgson again. Painful watching hoping we nick a goal. I didn’t even celebrate kanes goal, it was clearly thanks to walker doing a Munoz and a bit of luck. Could see what would happen after we score first

I have said before that Eze is great with Olise. I am more convinced than ever that if he leaves then the Eze we saw last night for England will be what people see. He seems to have found a place at palace and for his sake I would stay. He flourished under Roy and again under OG but was not great under PV.

As for England… I was screaming for Wharton. But possibly under Roy Southgate it could ruin him. But as it’s our country… stick him in and watch the team suddenly find rhythm and class.

Eze is icing, Olise is cake, i.e. he's not just decoration he affects the pattern of play in games - in a game of tactical insensity Eze can be useless - if it's flowing and he's getting service he can show off his undoubted talent, but a clever side could quite easily nullify him.

I think he'll play Bellingham deeper alongside Rice with Foden moved into the middle. Wharton is the answer but Southgate can't see it. He would prefer Mainoo to him, even though he is not a holding player.

Let's keep the ball this season!

Wondering why he took Wharton, the boy gave a perfect example of his style and ability in twenty minutes or so against Bosnia, yet he doesn’t get a mention.
Wharton is not a cure all for Englands problems but he is Southgate’s best bet to partner Rice. The game now demands you defend from the front ,the four that make up the main attacking threat don’t do that, all good attacking players , but in two games not a clue how to press and win the ball bringing constant pressure in our own half of the pitch, which Wharton would still have to deal with, never the less Whartons speed of thought and passing ability would improve what we have seen so far. It needs more aggression in front of him and Rice if we are going to retain the ball and appear to play better.

I wouldn't say he doesn't get a mention. Wright wants him in the team as do several of the Telegraph writers, amongst others. The consensus is Southgate doesn't have the balls

Only one voice matters, Southgate’s, and he doesn’t mention Wharton. As for doesn’t have the balls, then as said why take him if frightened to use him.?

You didn't mention Southgate in your previous comment, He very rarely mentions players as being a possible inclusion. He might just have taken Wharton as cover for Rice if he got injured, similar to Henderson only being there for emergencies

I didn’t need to specify Southgate, The people you say talk of Wharton, don’t pick the team, It’s doubtful Southgate, has any regard for any of their opinions. Only What Southgate says ,or doesn’t say is what counts. And he says nothing on Wharton doesn’t give him a mention as said. If you disagree fair enough. Yes he may only see Wharton as cover for Rice, but , and this is just an opinion , Wharton could complement Rice, the situation cries out for a player of Whartons type to do just that.

Your original comment just lacked clarity to me

As regards Wharton, I agree he should be picked

He has just given an interview reported in the major papers implicitly suggesting to Southgate that he needs to be in the team. He certainly does not lack in confidence and I can see him on the Olise trajectory

I wonder what the protocol is on players giving interviews and whether they are given a script to adhere to. Not sure Adam stuck to it

Very likely the last tournament for Southgate thankfully. Wharton has time on his side and hopefully the next England manager will see him for what he is and build the team around him, Rice and Bellingham.
