Just objectively untrue - he won man of the match in his full debut against Belgium and every report you can find agreed with how impressive he was. Highlights here;

This is another observation on the national team; fans generally love accusing the manager and selectors of being biased, while generally displaying far more bias in their assessments of players than the management do.

Imagine Wharton had just scored the winner in the FA cup final after an incredible breakthrough season - would any of us entertain a notion that he's just ok and overhyped? I highly doubt it.

Fair enough. If you see no bias in the reporting and the selection and you think it is the fans who are biased then that's an opinion. As far as I know, fans' complaints come from wanting to actually win a tournament because they believe that their team could be good enough. If the selection, tactics and motivation are correct. As other teams seem to manage with seemingly worse squads.

Well it's not coincidence that every fan base in the country thinks the selectors are biased specifically against players from their clubs...

Guehi has made nearly every squad for 2 or 3 years now - why would they be biased against Wharton but not Guehi...?

That fans' complaints come from a want to win doesn't make them correct;

"If we just approached these tournaments as we might at club level; recognising that yes we are one of the top 2-3 teams in the tournament but also that there are other very strong teams, and accepting that knockout football is notoriously unpredictable and determined by fine margins, I think people would enjoy it a hell of a lot more."

Indeed, not everyone can be correct but there are rather obvious issues with England's selection and tactics over the years. Southgate can not be referred to as a top manager, nor can the FA be described as competent, unfortunately. I think most would agree with that. If you don't think there's a big club bias then I accept your opinion. Maybe people would find one of two things more enjoyable, one - to win at all costs. Think Italy, Germany, Greece or two, to play exciting football. Neither look likely with the current management but I guess I'm just biased. I wanted Southgate to do well - as a Palace fan - but I don't think he's good enough as a supporter.

Again, we've lost a final, a semi-final and a quarter-final in the last 3 tournaments, losing very narrowly to good teams on all occasions - again, if fans consider that a failure or not good enough, I think that says more about them than it does the team or the manager.

We don't have a divine right to win these tournaments, as much as we have a strong team, so do plenty of other countries, and placing in the top 2, top 4 and top 8 over 3 tournaments seems entirely reasonable to me.

City have been the best team in Europe for at least 5 years and only just managed one CL after missing out by fine margins for many years previously; they lost the final in 20/21, lost the semi-final in 21/22, before eventually winning in 22/23. Would anyone say City's tactics and player selections were incompetent before last season?

Or is that just the nature of knockout football?

True enough. I didn't think England were too bad in the home Euros but I felt the tactics and the substitutions for the final deserved criticism. I didn't think they were as good in the World Cup from a relatively easy draw and they seem to have gone downhill since. I guess we can only see what happens. I'm not really fancying it but I'll get sucked in anyhow. If there are any Palace players it will pique my interest further. There are a couple of teams in the group that will provide a test. Andersen will be interesting for Denmark. The way he got our defence going without Guehi was remarkable. We could quite realistically have no Palace players for England but with Southgate I expect Guehi to get picked. If England were to go more attacking it would be nice to see Eze but could understand if he's left out. I can't really be too hard on Southgate but it seems to have ran its course, in my opinion, but clearly not yours, or the FA's. I can quite understand the argument and wish England the best of luck. I don't want them to do badly, I'd like them to win it.

That's fair - certainly not saying they are immune from criticism nor that they get everything right - I think he is very risk-averse and he is too reliant on Plan A as a coach, but I also think that quite suits tournament football, even if it's not always great to watch.

They've certainly got a chance - they're one of the top 3 or 4 teams in terms of player quality, but as you point out with Denmark, there are potential banana skins all over the place.

I think Guehi is going to majorly increase his stock this summer - I think he'll end up getting plenty of minutes due to the lack of options at centre half, and I think he'll end up showing the rest of the country what we already know at Palace; that he's a top-level centre half who would improve most teams in the country.

I almost missed this crouton amidst the word soup. So you are saying that England will win Euro 2024 are you? Well I had a quick glance at the betting odds and England has the shortest odds. However England's odds are always shorter than form or expectation would otherwise determine, because of the sheer weight of money that gets placed on them (dare I say by mug punters on the way home from the pub!).

I do think so, but judge nowt on the friendlies or group stage. Since the Southgate era (and I see him more as a spokesman for a very large coaching team) we have played the long game. Target = last 8 with no injury, suspension or fatigue of our best XI. And then we really motor.

And it would have worked last time save for that freakish rarity - a Kane penalty miss; and the time before had we had been cleverer in the subs.

The media are reporting that Maddison has been dropped and already left the England camp. I think this is great news for Eze and Wharton, Maddison's form has tailed off this season and he doesn't offer that much different from other England players.

Hopefully this increases the chance for our boys.

I do find it odd that he has been singled out before the official cut, unless of course he is injured.

Agree, I don’t think he justifies a place on current form, particularly with so many similar options.

The timing is odd though - apparently he was told he’s not going to the tournament but would be starting on Friday night, and he opted to leave the camp, which I can’t say I blame him for.

Agreed what was the point of that.

According to the Mail Curtis Jones has also been cut which is great news for our boys. Apparently so has Quansah.
