i dunno about Old Nic....machiavelli.

However, Karl Marx was the most unMarxist fella. Propped up financially by his wealthy elitist friend Friedrich Engels. Marx had a cleaning lady, whom he knocked up while the wife was buying posh stuff at Fortnam & Masons.

both General Franco and Mussolini forged a fascist Catholic State. Yet both may have been atheists. Similarly chairman Mao had very questionable Marxist credentials.

Margaret Thatcher, financial prudence. Cautious and conservative. Seemingly she was spending money like a footballers wife and cooking the books of the National Accounts by putting Capital-selling ( privatisations of utilities ) onto the Current side of the budget.

South Africa was very sparsely populated by a small tribal people.

Then the Dutch arrived and cultivated it.

Much later, the Zulus and Kwasi and other tribes moved south.

Then the British arrived who were brutal, wanted it primarily to protect trade routes around the cape, and who brought Asian labour.

So, when you hear references to "indigenous" (black) people fighting the colonial (white) oppressors, they may have a point against us, but not the Afrikaner. They were there first.

I don't want to be mistaken, as it's not a wholesale exculpation of some of the draconian and brutal power-grabs we mounted against many native peoples. S Africa, yes. What happened in Australia as it was declared Terra Nullius was horrendous and could be described as a genocide against the natives.

Nevertheless, we went to countries that still operated under a feudal/tribal system and we brought along the rule of law, a justice system and habeous corpus essentially enshrining the personal freedom of the individual.

We also brought along advanced currency and fiscal systems that paid and taxed people fairly, freeing folk from unfair tithes they had to pay to the local tribal overlord.

Furthermore, science & tech, sanitation, surgery, infrastructure...Many other things. It's Yin and Yang like many other conditions in life.

TAlking to my niece however, you would think the British Empire was something akin to the marauding Orks and Goblins of Tolkien. Funny that capitalism and the East India Company et al was the driving force for all the wealth she blindly expects today

Yup you don't hear many offering to give up their wealth as reparations but they would like you to.

Capitalism for all it's fault ha been a corner stone of evolution. If you were the best hunter in the tribe you would expect the biggest share of the food and women. The oldest writings that we know of relates to tax and property. The strongest and richest survived and this is our gene pool.

On balance the Empire did more good than harm.

you are talking about Darth Vader and his Death Star ? i presume.

Cos every other Empire , in history, always had a ton of locals fighting. Fighting to rid themselves of the imperial yoke.

Another nice Story.....

the yanks invaded Kuwait to liberate the locals from the imperial yoke of Saddam Hussein. And to re-install peaceful equitable democracy. And a nice government of everybody with the same surname.

According to scholars who have come across ancient texts Moses never led the israelites out of slavery as they were not slaves in Egypt but immigrant workers.Sme as the pyramids were not built by slaves but skilled workers.

Most ancient buildings/constructions were built by Aliens, who were stranded on Earth when their spaceship crashed, wiping out the dinosaurs.

Tourists flock from all over the World to the Guinness Brewery in Dublin. Guinness : The apotheosis of irishness.

Porter-beer was invented in London. Guinness has always been a British company. It was Known in Dublin for employing protestants loyal to the Crown.

In the 1916 Easter Rising , Guinness provided Kegs for the British Army to construct armoured cars.

Scotland and Kilts, harking back to ancient times.......another historical tradition of dubious provenance ( allegedly )....possibly a mere 400 years old.

[Link]

and so the wonderful portrayal of the villain below is erronous history ?

ah yes. King William of Orange. The poster boy for Ulster Protestants. And where is Orange ? its a principality in Provence, France. And still today its a predominantly Catholic region.

Although today it does have many non-Catholics too. Protestant ? nope, but your clue is that they would be highly unlikely to consume a Pork hot-dog at a Glasgow Rangers match.
