By my logic this, as it stands, is our squad for next season...

GK

Johnstone, Guaita, Whitworth

CB

Guehi, Andersen, Richards

RB

N/A

LB

Mitchell

MF

Doucoure, Riedewald, Ahamada, Hughes, Eze, Schlupp

WF

Olise, Ebiowei, Rak-Sakyi

FW

Mateta, Eduoard, Ayew

Out of Contract

Zaha, McArthur, Tomkins, Milovojevic, Clyne, Ward, Ferguson, Butland

You'd assume that McArthur, Tomkins, Clyne and Ward will stay on and possibly Zaha. Ebiowei and Rak-Sakyi probably out on loan again.

However, with the exception of the goalkeepers and maybe central defence if Guehi and Tomkins stay, we pretty much need another RB, LB, CM, WF and FW, is that fair? Big summer ahead.

Nearly three months on from this, here's the updated squad with a couple of days until the season begins.

GK

Johnstone, Mathews, Whitworth

CB

Guehi, Andersen, Richards, Tomkins

RB

Clyne, Ward, Ferguson

LB

Mitchell, Hall (looks set to sign)

MF

Doucoure, Lerma, Riedewald, Ahamada, Hughes, Eze, Schlupp

WF

Olise, Franca, Ebiowei, Rak-Sakyi

FW

Mateta, Eduoard, Ayew

Have left Guaita out as that seems untenable. We are clearly still extremely light in attacking positions given that Ebiowei seems to have disappeared, JRS will surely go on loan and Franca is inexperienced. Would argue that we still need two wide players, a goalkeeper and a forward at a minimum.

We were somewhere around Barstow, on the edge of the desert, when the drugs began to take hold...

The Problem is that we have to sell one of the 3 strikers first, Ayew and Schlupp are really wide players and are ok as a back up to Olise and probably Franca, Lewis solves the Left back problem, if nobody leaves then a CF is the only a must, unless the Guaita situation is not resolved, then a keeper.

Our squad depth is so thin going into the opening game of the season.

Out has gone Zaha, McArthur, Milojovic, Butland
In has come Lerma, Franca

Academy players out : Phillips (loan), Plange (loan(, Boateng (loan), o,Brien (looks like about to be sold), Kymani-Gordon(looks to be going on loan).

Injured, Olise, Hughes, Franca, Ferguson (must still be injured as he hasn't featured), not sure if Mitchell is fit yet.
Add to that Guiata is refusing to play, Lewis Hall hasn't yet joined on loan.

We are 1 key injury or suspension away from being right in trouble.

Hodgson was asked about the squad weakness at the press conference and said that the Chairman and DOF were seeking to address the matter.
He was also asked about uncertainty around the futures of some of the squad.
He said he took the job hoping to have the same squad at least as finished last season, with the exception of the uncertainty around Zaha.
In fact he said that he hoped that squad would be added to.
He did seem a bit downbeat about this as if he wasn't that confident about retaining/building the squad, but on the other hand said he felt positive about the prospects for the season.
The Hughes injury sounds long termish and Franca can't even train yet and will not be able to for some weeks.

The squad getting smaller and smaller now as o’brien has left and olise on verge of leaving
3 goalies(2 youngsters) , 7 def , 11 midfielders which inc amahada, eboiwei, riedewald, franca and rak sakyi who aren’t exactly regulars and 2 forwards with Mateta linked away too.
Roy said the squad is light but now we’re straw weight
Let’s hope for more than 2 players in this window!!

I wouldn't class Matthews as a youngster. But you are right we need more than 2 incoming. I suspect we'll get them before the window closes.

We've lost Butland, Zaha, McArthur, Luka and potentially Olise and Guiata.
I know the argument would be that only Zaha, Olise and Guiata would be regulars, but it does point to an overall weakening of the squad.
I would prefer to have Guiata or Butland on the bench than Matthews .
I would prefer to have Zaha and Olise on the wings than Ayew and Schlupp.
We've lost a lot of experience from the squad.
So far only Lerma has come in to strengthen the squad , with Franca yet to be able to show what he can add.

I don't think the club anticipated losing Zaha,Olise or Guiata and seem to have been taken by surprise.
For example would we have tried harder for long term target Sarr if we thought we'd have these gaps?
He's not pulled up any trees recently, but he could have been an option in the light of unfolding events.
It all comes across now as a bit last minute as opposed to properly planned.

In this case isn't the use of the word "squad" an oxymoron?

I say to myself,”it will be okay,” every time we lose a quality player. At this point it’s gone too far. Lerma, Schlupp, Doucoure, and Hughes were a top half group. Attack with Eze, Olise, Mateta, Edouard, are bang mid table. Back line is top 8 in the league, with Andersen and Guehi anchoring. With Franca, this team could push for Europe.
Now to the reality of the situation, we are a gutted squad. Olise and Doucoure will be gone before Matchday 2. Who knows what Franca is and if Guehi will be around. Instead of eyeing a top 6 spot we will be battling for 15-17 just keeping our noses ahead of SU,Luton, and Burnley.

I thought even if we keep hold of Olise & Doucoure we would not finish much better than 14th. The front line is woeful even though we beat Sheffield. We cannot expect Eze to carry the team every game.
Lose both Olise & Doucoure and it is a relegation scrap.
Luton & Sheffield should occupy the bottom 2 and then it’s a scrap for the other place with a fair few clubs involved IMO.
Hall has been put up for sale for £ 30 million, no loan deal. I think it is time to stop doing business with the Scum club Chelsea after the alleged approach of Olise.
The depth of the squad is extremely thin, a couple of injuries to key players & we are championship standard.
Another season of hoping we reach January in a fair position and if not panic loan or buy, even though it’s known the January transfer is the wrong time to do business, is not the right approach to a new season.
The gulf in investment between the top 8 & the rest has grown beyond our current misery investment and something needs to give.
Not the way to run a Premier league club.

Squads paper thin. Can’t see any major money being spent until the new long term manager is appointed at the end of the season. With respect to Roy he’s just a stop gap and it won’t do us any favours trying to get players in.

Mysterious decisions selling young talent to top European clubs ….he could have been a valuable squad member…..Tomkins and Richard’s are more than likely going to be injured when needed.
