In today's Times, Martin Samuel claims that '' Roy's had an easy ride '' - Vieira harsh sacking etc etc. That seems to be the Media stance on the subject. All the criticism of Vieira's sacking seems to be from those who weren't watching week on week and only looked at the position in the table. I've had loads of people who support other clubs expressing their surprise at his sacking but they only picked up on his initial effect in his first season. And what they see and hear in the media.
Living down here does have some advantages. At least you can see them cry. |

Yep. It is always a view from a distance. It is also a view that can be afforded when you care not as to the fate of the club. Those financially and emotionally invested were less laissez-faire towards the whole thing - perhaps there is a chance (I don't think so myself) we would have been fine under PV but that's not a risk anybody with something to lose was willing to take. The greatest example of this for me is Garth Crooks or often pundits on MoTD. They remind me of those people who only ever watch YouTube clips of players yet bizarrely assume a superior knowledge of them on this basis. Go to games week in and week out and then let me know what you think. On the very rare occasion Crooks has included a Palace player in his TOTW and provided commentary that avoids his personal opinion on wider matters, it is often all too obvious he hasn't watched anything beyond 3 min highlights of our game
Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!! |

Crooks is now saying that it is not enough for Haaland to score a bucket of goals to be seen as one of the players of the season: It is clear to me that this buffoon is desperately trying to cultivate an 'off the wall' eccentric image for himself, in order not to look boring and be just a pundit who gives his opinion on players' abilities and merits (which is all he is - a poor one at that). Best to ignore the fool. Edited by Slimey Toad (17 May 2023 11.07am)

Less 'off the wall, eccentric' for me though ST and more of an arrogant, 'I am a distinguished gentlemen of superior footballing and all else knowledge, therefore listen to my views which will of course differ from the rest of you plebs, given I am a superior being'. The BBC has responded to my complaint as follows: “Palace brought Roy Hodgson out of retirement to help stave off relegation worries, and Garth’s point was that the next manager will be ‘younger’, if not ‘young’. As such, we’ve changed ‘young’ to ‘younger’….” A fob off if ever I saw one

Yes, I consider myself to have been well and truly fobbed too: Dear Mr YT Thanks for contacting us about Garth Crooks' latest team of the week on the BBC Sport website (https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/65490056). In the section on Eberechi Eze, Garth is referring to Crystal Palace’s need for a new manager for next season and beyond, and the ‘young’ reference was not intended to be loaded criticism of Roy Hodgson. Palace brought Roy Hodgson out of retirement to help stave off relegation worries, and Garth’s point was that the next manager will be ‘younger’, if not ‘young’. As such, we’ve changed ‘young’ to ‘younger’. As a pundit for BBC Sport, Garth is employed to provide his expert opinion from a lifetime in football and clearly has his own views on Patrick Vieira’s sacking. We’d like to thank you for sharing your concerns with us, which we’ve discussed with the team at the Sport website. This helps to inform our ongoing work. Thanks again and wishing you all the best, BBC Complaints Team

Thanks again and wishing you all the best, BBC Complaints Team I received this as well, as did everyone else presumably. Not surprising, and I agree he probably didn't mean to offend Roy, but he was used for his vitriolic attack on the club. He has his own views on PV's sacking but one is his ethnicity, the BBC cannot pretend otherwise. Palace, as far as I believe, is no way a racist club, so is Crooks fundamentally saying that there is such a dearth of black managers at this present time sacking one is just not 'helpful' despite their current performance? This is just ridiculous and totally impractical. And changing from 'young' to 'younger' makes all the difference. Let's appoint BFS, he's 'younger'!! Edited by Slimey Toad (19 May 2023 6.25am)

I noticed that john Barnes was at it again on a Simon Jordan podcast. Apparently he had a better win ration at Celtic (1%) than Steven Gerrard (Rangers) but he got sacked ergo racism. Sometimes Barnes talks a lot of sense about racism but when it comes to his managerial career he is out with the fairies. He took over a decent Celtic side and was sacked 8 months later Stevie G on the other hand took over a Rangers side that had been second best to Celtic for years. In his second season he won the title and left for a bigger job. If JB had been hard done by he had plenty of opportunities to correct this travesty and yet his managerial career has hardly been stellar. Great player but not a good manager, bit like Steveie G really

I got that same generic reply. However, they are picking on the wrong guy here. I've got time on my hands to take it further !
