If we have ambitions to improve as a club, we can't sell our best players. These players have bonded very well, and we need to keep them together, especially as Wolf's future is so uncertain

This is outdated thinking in my eyes and if Brighton had dug in over selling Cucarella, Bissouma, Trossard, White etc they wouldn't have been able to build a team that have done so well this season.

The horrible reality is that they have leapfrogged us by being shrewd at transfers and if we have any chance of moving up that table we have to do the same.

In the last few years we've roughly bought Eze for 15m, Guehi for 20m, Andersen for 15m, Olise for 7m and Doucoure for 20m.

That's 75-80m for 5 outstanding players. If we can sell Guehi for £50-60m and use the money to invest in the team, we're going to be stronger overall even if he will be a big individual loss.

The sad reality is that it's the only way we'll be able to spend.

I concur with the general thrust of these sentiments.

In the final analysis we are not capable of retaining our star assets if more prestigious clubs come calling.

Before Man Utd signed Maguire he had played around 250 games, covering the Championship and PL, and he had at least 16 England caps.

Man Utd purchased a player who was strong in the air, a threat at set-pieces, was more than capable of bringing the ball out of defence, distributed the ball well with a good a long diagonal pass in his locker and was physically imposing.

I would suggest that Man Utd signed a more capable player than Guehi is at this present time but I recognise his qualities and he will improve with experience.

I never rated Maguire and always complained when he got picked for England. He's just a big thug. I get what you're saying though, but that's also my point, Guehi has not yet proved himself to be a 50/60m+ defender. Like with AWB it may come down to whether Parish is under any pressure to sell; if he's not then he'll likely demand a premium.

Until now that Guehi, has proved a success and the inevitable interest in him is starting to happen, there was no mention of a 20% Chelsea interest in any move he makes.
What was said at the time of his transfer to Palace ,was that Chelsea had the option to match any offer Palace receive, that is totally different, and IMHO much more likely as it is the option Chelsea had on Nathan Ake when he left Bournemouth for City.

Indeed its a fine balancing act . Young players wont sign for us if they think they will not be allowed to move to more prestigious clubs if they are wanted by them . I suppose we need to get as close as we can to them so other things become a consideration .

Exactly, we are now in a position to sell one player a year without it damaging the squad to much, obviously, some of the money needs to be reinvested in a couple of players whose value will also rise.

Agree, other than Bolasie and AWB i don't think we've sold anyone for decent money (£5m plus) since we gained promotion so if Guehi was to be sold (or an.other) it wouldn't be the end of the world.

Couple of other points to make.

FFP rules might have some impact on whether we do sell.
Wolves, Everton and to a lesser extent Leicester now have issues due to years of heavy spending.

Finally, don't under-estimate the will of the player. If a player has his head turned it is difficult to keep an unhappy player.
I don't think Guehi us that type of player, but it does happen quite frequently.

Well Wilf went for 12 million, I believe, and Gayle for a similar amount . But only Bolasie was anything like the model of buying young and selling for a profit and he probably only went because Everton came in with a ludicrous offer

Wilf went before we were promoted (and for £10m). Forgot about Gayle, however, we did pay a massive amount for him and so the profit wasn't excessive. My point remains FFP rules may require us to sell the odd player for a big profit every now and again. Something we haven't done since AWB, 3 years ago.

Bolasie was a wonderful player for Palace but never recovered form and fitness at Everton

I really think we have to take advantage of the position with Guehi, although everyone would like him to stay, if a bidding war starts between 3/4 rich clubs we could really push the price up to silly money, particularly if Richards looks like he is going to be a very good CD, and reinvest the 60/70/80m in the squad, particularly as luka, McArthur, Guehi and Wilf (if he goes) is 300k a week saving on salaries

I don’t think many will disagree with this. Guehi is a great asset, but everyone has their price. If selling him allows us to reinvest in a couple of other players…then that’s the way cookie crumbles (or should I say, that’s the Brighton philosophy).
