The council is bankrupt no doubt they will blame the previous administration but someone has to pay. If the government pays it's a green light to other councils to act irresponsibly.

I feel sorry for the locals but next time they might want to think before ticking the box at election time.

Well, apparently they have now agreed a deal with gove to write off £540m. Almost adds up to 10 years of underfunding so from my perspective that is a suitable offer.

However, it doesn't solve the funding gap going forward, but it's certainly helpful.

According to this which is a few years out of date and of course is politically bias Bromley is nearly at the bottom with regard to government funding in London.

Each year I get a leaflet from the council complaining about this I will keep an eye out in March perhaps we can compare figures with Croydon.

There is always an element of spin as some councils receive other types of grants which they may or may not include.

Noted. It may not be Bromley... it could be any one of sutton, lambeth, merton etc. I sourced the 60m figure via insidecroydon, which are usually pretty good when it comes to accuracy on local issues but for some reason don't mention who the comparison is with. I'd also assume they're using up to date figures.

I was born and raised on shrublands. Lived upstairs from rock bottoms, then back to shrublands. Both areas were ok 20 odd years ago. Now it’s a s*** hole. Best thing about it is the A23 towards the M25 for an escape. And palace of course.
patronising everyone with an opinion about this isn’t really the way to go. But hey you fill your boots as you appear so worldly wise about the subject. Maybe you should give the mayor a call for a coffee morning to discuss your resolution to the problem.

OK, so used to live here, haven't lived here for 20 years. Got it.

It's a debate. As such it helps to have some depth of knowledge on the subject.

So what you’re actually saying is unless you live in Croydon your opinion isn’t relevant. I believe you don’t live in Folkestone but have had much to say about immigration !
Although 20 years ago croydon wasn’t the s***e hole it is now so that’s an opinion you can’t argue with as it’s just that. An opinion. How long have you resided in this champion of a borough ?

90% of councils are having to dip into their reserves.
Sort of explains the absolute nut house that Croydon council is. It doesn’t have any !

Just think of that £540 million and how many nurses, teachers, care workers it could pay before slating hmg.

I thought there are supposed to be independent auditors assisting councils from sliding into the abyss ... where were they on this occasion? Surely, it doesn’t just happen overnight? However, build a few council hostels to accommodate illegal immigrants and the money will come flooding in ... problem solved.

It's certainly less relevant on this very specific and current topic – also, you're not directly affected by it. Easy to snipe from the sidelines...

If you'd started a thread on immigration in Folkestone, sure. That's slightly different from discussing immigration as a general topic. Why do I constantly need to explain the obvious

Definitely can argue with that generic assessment. It's a massive borough – for some reason people just seem to associate Croydon with central Croydon, more often than not the area around EC station and West Croydon. There are of course loads of relatively affluent, semi-suburban areas, but it's far easier to just lump everything to gather to suit the narrative.

You also have rose tinted spectacles if you're saying Croydon didn't have it's fair share of s***hole areas 20, 30, 40 years ago. If what you really mean is the areas with loads of 'ethnics and immigrants' are s***holes, then just say it.

I departed Croydon in the late 90s never to return.

In terms of the Council, I had a dear friend who was a Labour councillor.Over the years we enjoyed many tipples and many bouts of jocularity and hilarity.I reflect with fondness the times we had together.

We never discussed politics and even though he was a councillor in my ward I never once voted for him, given that he was on the opposite side of the house to me ! Some Conservatives who also knew him well and imibed with him for many a year used to cast a vote for him and a vote for the Conservative candidate. I always voted for the 2 Conservative candidates!
