We’ve got 24 points from the first 20 games. Last season we had 23 from 20, the season before also 23. We clearly miss the midfield we had last season, but we’re doing no worse for it. Maybe because the common factor is lack of firepower up front. This season is horrendous for scheduling with the 4 week break for the funeral, 6 weeks for the WC and the most ridiculous current run of fixtures I can remember. We should probably cut PV some slack.

I would agree with this except we had hardly anyone playing at the WC and have had more time off than most teams to prepare and yet we have had some performance stinkers against mediocre teams and looked woefully under prepared after the WC break. The flurry of fixtures certainly suits the big squads but you can’t say our players are tired given the amount of time they’ve had off.

PV has some frankly baffling ideas about first XI player choice, set up and substitutions but agree that points wise we are where we more or less should be so you can’t complain too much. The next month or so will be very telling of how our season is going to pan out.

Stats can be a bit misleading. I think we have had only 2 'fully deserved' wins this season - Villa in August and Bournemouth recently. The other 4 wins - Leeds, Wolves, Saints and West Ham could easily have been drawn.

I can think of very few games we have lost or drawn where we deserved more, maybe the odd point here or there.

To me it is clear we are a lesser team than last season, regardless of points. We are struggling to create chances and impose ourselves on games. Whilst there are mitigating circumstances to deny there is a problem is foolhardy

In no way would I knock Roy as he did a very good job for us but he would not have brought or played players like Guehi, Andersen, and Olise and would not have allowed Gallagher to run about all over the pitch like he does.
Vieira is doing a good job. His hands are tied due to the clubs lack of funds but recognises the same areas of team that need addressing as most supporters.
Our recruitment has been brilliant over the last 18 months so, lets hang on to the summer and go again.

I'm inclined to agree with post however 'holding on to the summer' seems ludicrously wishful thinking for me now. That thinking incorporates everything up to and including a meteor striking Selhurst Park at any given home game I might add.

Now Zaha's got a bit of green grass ahead of him here... and finds Ambrose... not a bad effort!!!!

How do you know his hands are tied, the recruitment has been brilliant over the last 18 months, but unfortunately it is not showing on the pitch, Freedman is doing the recruiting anyway, how do you know Roy wouldn't have wanted them, PV is doing an OK job, nothing more.

One could say the recruitment by the standards set in this league , was OK nothing more.
Would this recruitment be considered brilliant at most other Premier clubs?
Knowing the nature of Crystal Palace and it’s finances , the recruitment has worked out with the help of better than average knowledgable management. Both Roy, and Pat.
Both managed not just to survive but be near the top of the Premiers second half.
By the standards of our recruitment in nine years OK is the best you can ask for.
Viera, was able to play a more entertaining yet effective game last season, ‘this year it’s not so easy with what without doubt is a lesser squad, and as ever in the top grade everyone has worked us out. As every season we have days below par and get turned over, but considering he has stuck to the young flair players that are supposed to entertain the punters, and don’t always compete well enough to do that and win difficult points , the blokes done and does a brilliant job.

I think that the Recruitment is brilliant because every one, maybe bar Edouard, has a sell on value, at he end of this season 8 players costing 60m can walk away free, and you cannot run a club of our size doing that, so a vast improvement on recruitment, but in my opinion, players are performing a long way worse than they should be, why?

The story of Vieira getting increasingly frustrated with lack of transfers is growing apace. He could walk end of season. He wouldn't exactly be the only one who ever did.

You're looking at this in the wrong way. Maybe they did together cost £60m, but you should be looking at what they are worth in the market today. So my estimates ;

Butland - £1-2m
Tompkins - Free
Luka - £2m if we're lucky
MacArthur - Free
Zaha - Free
Clyne - Free
Ward - Free
Ferguson - Free

Not all of them will necessarily leave. Wilf has been offered a new deal, although it looks unlikely he'll take it. It's possible that Ward could be offered another year but it's hard to see where the rest could be justified in retaining. Bar Ferguson, none are the right side of 30.

Our recruitment is better than it was, but it's far from brilliant compared to the rest of the league.

Brighton, Brentford and Fulham look the pace setters for value recently. Chelsea, Wolves and West Ham in particular look very questionable.

In all likelihood we will be in the same position after Mr Hodgson departed whereby several players left the club with no resale value at all.
Replacements will of course cost princely sums and one can only speculate as to whether the club will decide that it needs to offload players who will command significant fees.

Our Net Spend in 2020-21 after the departure of Mr Hodgson was around £75 Mill !
