This was clearly the strategy agreed on between chairman and manager (I'm thinking Pardew in particularl) when they decided the step toward survival and moving up the PL ladder was to get in a few seasoned pros on silly wages. As you suggest, we now find ourselves in a bit of a tricky situation as we attempt to be more sustainable. I wouldn't entirely blame PV for what is happening on the pitch. We don't know what was discussed during his interview process, or if he was promised funding.

i understand what you are saying and we dont know what PV was told, but surely he can see that 4-3-3 is unplayable with the players we have, and adapt accordingly.

Yeah, I think we have come to that conclusion.

Exactly. Or the next two months will be very painful indeed.

Any calls for Pat's head are ridiculous. I'm sure he'll be fine. I'd much rather persevere and find out rather than replace him with a Hodgenesque type.

The common link in this sad saga is Jordan Ayew and his three big misses.
Against Fulham he hit the bar when the score was 0-0, although it was not an easy chance.
Against Spurs at 0-0 he shot too close to Lloris, who nonetheless made a brilliant save.
Against Southampton he hit the bar from approx 5 yards. That would have made it 2-0 and probably secured the game.
PV plays him in a striking role when his scoring record is lamentable - 5 goals in 95 games, I think. I know PV values his other attributes but surely by now we need an out-an-out striker in the middle: either Edouard or Mateta.

The right place at the right time

Every one (outside top 6) goes through a winless run and playing crap! We are notorious for it! We usually string a few wins together somewhere along the way and it's okay!

We just had an amazing season last season and hard to top it! So much adrenaline from it all! I am the first to admit since the brentford game the games have become a bit of a chore to watch compared to last season! What can you do! Gotta ride it out and then the good times will return and you feel much better from it all! :-)

This is a valid point and Vieira continually highlights these key moments and the missing of chances as match changing and an area that has to improve.
How though?
For all of his other strengths Ayew is neither prolific nor clinical and this is unlikely to change.
It seems that Vieira has his doubts about both Edouard and Mateta which seems clear by their limited involvement and Vieira’s recent preference for using either Zaha or Ayew down the middle.
In general our shooting at goal leaves a lot to be desired.
Eze often scuffs the ball or drags it with his side foot, Olise tries to shape/bend every shot into the far corner of the net but has a lamentable record with this technique.
Schlupp can strike the ball well but rarely is in range of the goal these days.
On the occasions Edouard does feature he tends to try to place the ball or wrong foot the keeper but he doesn’t look too convincing.
I had hopes for Mateta as a one touch finisher last season, but this season he has looked erratic and wild in his attempts.
I wouldn’t be averse to Ings joining as at least a short term solution.

To top it all off, that Leeds draw almost certainly means we'll play United next midweek due to their fixture congestion. That makes our upcoming run:

15 Jan: Chelsea A
18 Jan: United H
21 Jan: Newcastle H
4 Feb: United A
11 Feb: Brighton H

Pffffft.

If it does happen, the one possible saving grace is it's sandwiched between City H and Arsenal A from United's perspective. Chelsea, United, Newcastle in the space of 7 days before 2 weeks off could be very squeaky for Vieira.

26th January 2010 - Enter Administration
2nd May 2010 - D-Day 1 - Survival at Hillsborough
1st June 2010 - D-Day 2 - Survival at Lloyds
7th June 2010 - CPFC2010 exchange contracts.
