You can be sure of a very warm welcome here. That's a typical Daily Mail piece of attempted troublemaking. The remarks are obviously addressed to those who determine the marketing strategy. They very specifically refer to the very unusual circumstances of the way that some second homeowners behaved during the lockdowns, by escaping the cities to come and use their properties here when they were supposed not to travel. There were also some who rented on holiday parks, but that was stopped. This caused significant problems for the health service here.

In normal circumstances, everyone will be greeted with warmth.

Not just the Mail though

More nonsense from the Mail. I doubt whether they have actually talked to anyone about this but no-one will be angry about Greggs opening here. Bemusement is much more likely.

Rowes and Warrens, the two bakeries mentioned are both plant bakeries and, whilst not that highly regarded by the locals, they are still a huge improvement on Greggs, which produces a bland, unexciting range of mass-produced nothingness. I think they are terrible and would only ever choose them if there wasn't another choice within a fair distance. Which there is in Truro. There are some much better, smaller, local producers which are favoured by the locals.

Whoever at Greggs took this decision doesn't understand the local market at all. In my opinion it will close very quickly.

Not just the Mail. Welcome one and all to inclusive Cornwall

Has anyone mentioned Greggs' products are mostly awful compared to independent bakers everywhere, they are however relatively cheap and these days there os a need for thst in the food sector

But answer to your question is we will be moving out of s*** hole croydon and London once the kids have been through school in a couple of years..

There are already a few cultures here, though I guess not as evident or as numerous as where you live. As I very rarely visit London and the SE these days, I am unqualified to comment, other than in general terms. Everyone seems to get by OK here. I just hope they can continue to, and folk elsewhere can too. I don't see here being built over, although I can see the numbers increasing substantially, as there is quite a lot of room.

My wife wants to live in Cumbria. I think that's likely to remain quiet!

Have read up a bit on the potential of lithium mining in Cornwall. Most optimistic forecasts indicate in five years time the industry might employ 400 people. Likely most of the technical folks will not be locals .

Not bad news but hardly makes Cornwall a happening place.

In the medium/longer term EVs will be replaced by hydrogen fuelled vehicles so I guess have to make hay asap

There is a Scottish version called a Bridie. Not the same because they only have steak mince, sometimes onion too, the mass produced ones are a bit hit and miss but when butchers make them they are usually very good.

Do they batter and deep fry them Ted?

It's a start. After years of decline, the mining industry looks as though it might be turning a corner. They are talking about recovering heat from this as well, which could easily become important. So let's see. Actually, the Camborne School of Mining continues to supply mining engineers to all over the world, so it might be nice for them to have some jobs locally.

Not as far as I know but they're sold in butchers & bakers rather than chip shops. Pies of any sort aren't very common in fish & chip shops up here and saveloys are unknown - much to be my regret.

It's kind of strange here regarding pies/pasties they're available but expensive compared to the UK. There's a place in the West Village called Myers of Keswick & they are very pricey albeit they're baked on the premises & are fresh.
You can get decent sausage rolls at The Butcher's Block in Queens & also there is Bourkes which I believe is an Australian company (no doubt one of our Aussie eagles can confirm) but once again expensive.
Last but not least a company called Pie Face popped up in multiple locations about 5/6 years ago but as fast as they appeared they soon filed for bankruptcy (once again an Australian Company)
Pastelitos & Empanadas as well as the Jamaican Beef Patty are probably the nearest thing.

The small ones are Scotch pies (also called Shell pies) often eaten with baked beans on top of them.
Somerfield used to sell them in London.
Personally I prefer the steak & haggis version.
