Can someone on here who's played football at a half-reasonable level (or anyone else who wants to chip in) tell me: do footballers like being the penalty taker, or do they hate the idea, or do they - if told - just get on with it as part of their professional duty? If I could kick a ball as hard as Luka, I think I'd enjoy it.

Michail Antonio is not enthusiastic about taking penalties, he gets exceedingly nervous and his heart starts racing. He took a penalty when he was 19, his legs turned to jelly and he missed.

The Jedi used to strike a decent penalty. The modern day trend of this stuttering run up doesn’t work for me. I would just smash it down the middle. Whoever takes them needs to strike the ball cleanly and hard. No pussy footing about. The best pen in the Newcastle shootout was taken by Joel Ward. I recall Luka missed his. That all being said I would go with Anderson. When Eze shoots he hits the target about 1 in 6 so he’s a no from me

Ivan Toney has an unorthodox penalty taking technique and he has scored 25 of the 26 penalties he has taken.

Because there's a muscle memory that comes naturally. For example, Kane or Haaland or top strikers like that could take one with their eyes close. They just know where the corners are because they've put balls there so many times. There's a reason you don't see many central defenders taking pens... Agree with your point about just fricken hit it.

I always enjoyed taking penalties, i didnt miss one out of 18 . I was told from a young age from a semi pro" a keeper will always dive down either side and never dives up either side so keep it either side and up " it worked for me .

Players practice free kicks and corners so why not. If you practice with a goalkeeper I would expect the keeper to provide feedback e.g. I guess correctly because of your run up or your eyes or your kicks to my left are easier to save than to the right. So over time a player learns his "tells" and eliminates them. Of course this doesn't mean you wont miss in a pressure situation but at least the player knows before the kick he has trained for this situation.
