Why in the world would anyone want to a "United Ireland" is beyond me. The Irish government cant even look after any county outside of dublin let alone a few more up north.

Exactly….you have to pay to see a doctor and for some treatments, , pay separately to get your bins emptied, get your own fire engine if your house is burning down etc etc.

Ha. Spent many a good time over there and the craic was always 90!

Driving near Sandy Row my mate's dad said walk down there and they'll give you the keys to the city. Mate chirps in. No they won't. They hate you coz you're English! We have an odd relationship with the jaffa.

The DUP are the working definition of lip service to the Anglo Irish accord. They have power shared in all but actuality. Any politician (save Boris) would have stood down over the suggestion of corruption but not that woman. Stood firm till blue in the face rather than hand over to her Deputy (mcguinness). also, anyone over there still believe that hogwash they spin about the protocol? Please! It's to avoid power sharing with a resurgent Sinn Fein.

I have never met an Irish person (and I am discounting the largely clueless US diaspora) who actually want to incorporate the six counties into the Republic.

And I don't blame them.

correct. And even a ton of the Catholic Irish living in NI are now all happy to live under the Union Flag. They even came out to welcome QE2.

the old fights were like two dogs pulling on a rabbit for food...for ownership. The new fights will be like two feckers in a WWI trench shoving a live grenade at each other

- you take it, i dont want it
- feckoff, it landed on you...its yours
- i did serve my time owning it, its your turn to own it now
- its not even proper irish
- its not even proper british
- well will somebody else take it ? maybe Israel/palestine will take it ?
- are you on drugs ? cos that really will get you kneecapped....much more than any Celtic/Rangers crap

I assume you are talking about people in ROI rather than the north? Of course, before anything were to happen vis a vis a united Ireland, there would be referendums in both the south and north so there would have to be "consent" in both.

If you speak to people around the border area in NI - south Armagh in particular, there is a great deal of support for a united Ireland; much of it is probably at an emotional level given the very troubled history of Ireland and I suspect the same might be the case more broadly in ROI. Also, many people in NI can see first hand the benefits of being in the EU.

My own personal view is that any border poll is many years away. Understandably, there is a great deal of caution in both ROI and NI especially around the possible unwillingness of some communities to accept the result and events that might then unfold.

see the link below. Surely the red parts of the map should always be British ? Now and forever. If it was guaranteed then there would be a less urgent need for all the politics, marches, and flags.

and the other parts ? to the West ? well, that is a different conversation that would need to be delicate and respectful of the needs of all.

a United Ireland ? no thanks.

That is reflected in a lower rate of tax

He wasn't technically her deputy. If she stood down, it would've still gone to the DUP until such time (like now) the balance changes.

Never read so much nonsense in my life. The voting and ideological patterns suggest a shift completely the opposite - More and more protestants are using Irish passports and voting SF. There has always been Catholic Unionists, but the growing trend is either resigned protestants to a United Ireland or a middle ground.

lots of true blue fellas like Mad Billy Adair can also have an irish passport. Its about convenience rather than ideology. A bit like Anjem Choudery being a brit or some of Bin Ladin's army having an american passport.

much of what you write has merit. But there will always be a rump of at least half a million Prods that do not want to be Irish....and you gotta respect any big army.

the real standoff in Ulster is about 'who is the boss?'' The paradox being that Sectarian shyte is ubiquitous in Ulster.... and very rare in London or Dublin. In those cities there is a clear and unequivocal agreement on 'who is the head of State'.

tons of british prods live in dublin, no problem. Tons of irish catholics live in London....some are even Eagles and wear red, white & blue on a Saturday. Its mostly in NI that things can get edgy. And also parts of Scotland.

to fix the problem ? not a United Ireland, nor a return to the troubles.

how to fix the problem ?

A stab in the dark here PV, but can I assume this man is not a Catholic?

The peace accord went along way to a fix. We now need generations to pass to leave it a semi dormant mild rumble. I attended a "mixed" marriage in Belfast just after the AIA was signed. Amazed to see police without assault rifles and flack jackets; and not a soldier in sight. I think that is a good start.

All possible so long as it is played fair and the US keep their big hooters out of it.

On the Americans, I am quite aware of how important a role they played in moving the impasse, but we cannot have policy fueled by an uninformed diaspora who think the Tans are burning down Cork today.

Maybe not, but their popularity was understandably waning and they were not prepared to take the chance.

In any event, the current MO of the DUP is to cling on to power and stifle nationalist opposition using any excuse as a cover. That would include keeping Stormont closed and a freeze on public services.

Protocol schmotocol as another poster has wisely articulated.
