Haha nah no running from things here, alcohol in general just makes me slow dumb & miserable, I do miss it on a baking hot day or hunkered down in my bivvy carp fishing but I'm kind of over it.

The mountains are calling & I must go.

Back in bygone days in the late 70s, I knew an elderly gentleman whose mind had deteriorated with age.He imagined me to be a fighter pilot and often mentioned "Loop the loop" and a German fighter pilot called Erich Hartmann adding "Erich Hartmann he was a hard man".

He would call me "Wing commander" and I recall being in a public house and hearing this chap shouting out "Wing commander, wing commander" as he spotted me at the bar.He was a charming chap.

That reminds me of "German George" actually he was Irish. We called him that because he would ask us a football question quite often it was obscure and none of us could get it however what we did guess was the answer would some how relate to :

- German football
- More often than not B. Dortmund hence his nickname.

What fascinated me was the complexity of the question it was like six degrees of separation (look it up) where the obvious and wrong answer was PL English related and yet eventually the bread crumbs would lead you to B. Dortmund.

Anyway he was a bit of a bore on the topic, just thought I would share (must be the heat).

Me and alcohol parted company a few years back, just couldn’t take the headaches and feeling as rough as a badgers backside the next day any longer, the joys of reaching bus pass territory.

However when I see some of the price’s being quoted on here for a pint I’m very happy with my decision. No wonder pubs are closing at an alarming rate.

Just too make you youngun’s pig sick, when me and my mates started our pub life, 5 pints cost a whopping £1, that’s one pound, they were the day’s.

Excuse me mine is as smooth as a baby's bum and I have been informed tight and shapely I thanked the man for the compliment at my age I will take a compliment from anywhere.

I gave up alcohol 6 years ago and don't regret it, I wasted my life in pubs there are better things in life.

As I have admitted, I do frequent Public Houses on a regular basis (Only in the evenings) but whilst I do imbibe in moderation, I would not assert that sobriety is always the actualite !

Life brings it with a plethora of pleasures, one of which for me, is a visit to a 'Local' for a tipple or two.

I informed my dear wife that tonight's game will be a "Hard watch" and she suggested that I refrain from tuning in and spend my evening enjoying some ale in a Public House !

Pubs as I knew them are a rare thing nowadays.

They all feel as though they need to offer food - and not just a simple affair, but some posh £15 Gourmet Burger Menu, to attract the money spending middle class.
Where have the Simple home cooked menus gone? We used to go to the pub, then if we wanted a gourmet affair we'd move on to a restaurant.

We have 2 kids, who are getting to that age that they eat adult portions. Going to the Pub for dinner rarely costs less than £100.
and it's now getting to the point that a quick trip to the pub for an after work 2-3 pints is costing £20pp minimum. We simply cannot afford to do it.

Unfortunately, the solution is being championed by that one institution that is so easily hated; WetherSpoons. Less than £10 for a meal and a pint is unprecedented in this day and age. but they prove it can be done.

There is a culture all over this country that people charge more because they can. Pubs are going to Price themselves out of business. Part of me does wonder if they reduced their prices, they'll earn more money, as it'll get more people in.
