how much stronger our squad has got , I look for positives then see how this all fits in with the bigger picture , you look for negatives and find reason not tobe positive 1. I do not subscribe to the view that our squad is significantly stronger than last season. 2. I certainly do not go out of my way to find reasons not to be positive. I merely form a judgement and whilst I have been less than optimistic about our prospects in recent seasons, my view was not formulated in the manner you have suggested.

However, There are still more than four weeks of the window left and we may well see more comings AND goings. It will be interesting to see what our views are come 2nd September by which date we will know our squad for this season and will have played five games, including the two toughest away games you can get.

I, as I am sure as everyone else is, am very curious to see what Vieira's first starting 11 will be. Given the injury to Olise, and the departure of Gallagher, I think he will start pretty much as he left off. Depending on what happens in the remaining transfer window of course.

For me, we are better than last season. Not a massive improvement, but a definite improvement. Gallagher is gone (though it could be argued that's been the case since March). Eze's return (to full fitness) goes a long way to mitigating that loss. He's more or less a new signing compared to his role last season. Olise, Guehi, Mitchell, and Edouard should all have improved now they have a year of PL experience under their belts. Even if the improvement is marginal, it still ought to be an improvement. Doucoure should be a significant upgrade over Kouyate (and Kouyate was no slouch). Johnstone should be a significant upgrade over Butland, even in a reserve role. Mateta is a much better player than he was twelve months ago. Collectively, the team is surely better for having a year of Vieira's tactics and coaching behind them. They're now in a position to execute, not just learn. There's still a month before the window closes so if more is needed, further help may yet arrive. Furthermore, no one around us is significantly stronger than they were last year (possibly excepting Saudi Arabia). Aims/grades for me: A - 55 points Any of those grades, add a + for a Cup Semi-Final or better.

Edited by sydtheeagle (30 Jul 2022 8.23pm) Yup the above. 3 issues. Will Olise return to full fitness? If he does (and our other key players stay fit) we will be one scary team. Zaha needs a final season. The other is coaching. All premier league virgins whose cherry was very much broken last season and who have had a chance to learn and develop. Time will tell if they have progressed.

Our signings thus far have been pretty solid. Doucouré seems to have been plan A, so to have secured him is really good. As mentioned, Eze looks like he's back to his old self, which could be brilliant. Guéhi and Mitchell and others are older and wiser and should really solidify themselves as Premier League standard. Zaha is transitioning into a new era of his career and I sense this could be the best season of his career from in terms of output. However, overall I can't help feeling we are slightly worse off than last season. We really need another influential central midfielder. To counter this if Edouard can get some goals, and Olise can develop and be the spark more regularly, I will be proved wrong There were such fine margins between 9th and 14th and it really wouldn't take much of a decline to find us in that bottom quarter. Then the ability to secure talent is a lot harder. We received a lot of goodwill praise last year for the change in playing style, when in reality from a points perspective, we were pretty much the same as previous years. So we need forward momentum to be a credible destination for European and Championship talent.

I am expecting us to keep our Premier League status with at least 45 points. The highly optimistic views that we will finish in the top 10 with more than 50 points, whilst creditable, are, in my opinion, unlikely. We have a good squad and I think we'll do better than last term, but it's going to be the usual Palace rocky ride. If you saw how Liverpool played yesterday and the ease with which Arsenal beat Chelsea the other day you'll understand where I'm coming from. As long as we finish above Everton I'll be a happy boy.
Dad and I watched games standing on the muddy slope of the Holmesdale Road end. He cheered and I rattled. |

Potentially we could have a much better season. Best option scenario: Zaha + 1 form a lethal goal scoring partnership, Wright&Bright mkII. We acquire a dominant midfielder, steely and a good passer. There are great improvements in defending set pieces. 2 or more youngsters start shining in the side. I can see a top 7 place if the above came about. Odds of this? 10-1? I dunno but I can dream.
I have now sufficient funds to last me the rest of my life. Provided I don't buy anything. |

Edited by sydtheeagle (30 Jul 2022 8.23pm) I am not splitting hairs, but the point about the improvement of one group of players suggests that Doucoure will need time to get used to the PL and even match Kouyate let alone surpass him. I'd love to be proven wrong and CD has been playing at the top level overseas. The reports suggest he is an upgrade. In PV we trust. Good post btw.
