The planning permission for Crystal Palace to redevelop their main stand in a £100million project at Selhurst Park has lapsed – leaving the club to go through a costly re-application process, or to continue to play their games in one of the smallest capacity stadiums in the Premier League.

Chairman Steve Parish and the club were granted planning permission by Croydon Council in April 2018 to rebuild the main stand. Under the proposals, the stadium capacity was to be increased by almost 10,000, to 34,259.

But to fulfil its plans, the football club needed to acquire land and property from its near neighbours, including seven houses – six of them council-owned – on Wooderson Close, which backs on to the current main stand.

The Wooderson Close residents have been enduring uncertainty over their homes’ futures for four years, a situation which now seems likely to continue for some time yet.

Nothing to do with planning system.

Housing shortage is due to house builders controlling the market which on purpose they want the prices high due to massive profits they make in doing so.

This is all on Palace they should have acted years ago and can't keep blaming other factors they had permission.

The prices for construction have increased as well again clubs fault for waiting.

This is all so predictable; we don't need a stupid great unaffordable vanity project stand that completely mismatches the rest of the ground. We need a two deck stand that matches the Holmesdale which will increase capacity, not bankrupt the club (again) and not require buying Sainsbury's carpark. Or am I just being too bloody sensible?

I said all along that this would never happen. I was told I was wrong and that the money was sitting in a special account and any day now all would begin.

Face up to it. Of we wanted to build a new stand or even a hole stadium, had we really really wanted it it would have been built. Forget the tosh about land in London. Spurs Arsenal and Brentford have done it.

This is all a bit Simon Jordanesque spin to cover up that we have a knackered old ground and not enough cash it do it up and stay competitive in the top division.

But hey we don't have a shiny new stand but at least rwe have a ground with character.

The Section 106 wasn’t signed before the new London Plan came into force, apparently due to a breakdown in relations with Croydon Council that have now been resolved.

A Section 106 is a legal agreement between an applicant seeking planning permission and the local planning authority, which is used to mitigate the impact of the new building on the local community and infrastructure.

It is likely a Compulsory Purchase Order will be served on Sainsbury’s if necessary.

The planning application didn’t lapse but a new one will now need to be put in, as the terms set out in the 2018 planning application do not comply with the London Plan adopted in 2021.

I feel zero sympathy for the Wooderson Close residents for many reasons, not least they moved there knowing they were in the shadow of a ble*ding great big stadium. Hard to miss really. And never likely to stand still at least figuratively and possibly also literally by all accounts
