If there were less toxic masculinity and more trans inclusivity at the Oscars then none of this would have happened.

Best screenplay Thank god there isn't a 'Best sex with Smith's wife' award.....they might have to stage the show in a stadium. I'm having far too much fun with this.

I'd largely agree, the two aspects where I might have some thoughts would be in....well, is Will Smith really uncomfortable with his open marriage? I can't say I follow him much but from what I have seen I get the impression he's not under a thumb....maybe that's wrong but it's an impression. Of course most would think he's allowing his wife to make a fool of him....I'm told the word 'cuck' is trending on Twitter. Still, his life, his choice. Perhaps he needs some mental help.

The other aspect that I'd have some sympathy for is in defending his wife's honour, that's some old school values I have some respect for.....and as a mitigation it was a slap not a beat down (though I agree some price must be paid). But that's as far as that goes....If this was someone insulting your wife in a pub I would understand more as it isn't your job. Smith is a celebrity turning up at an award show where the presenters take the mickey out of the guests...the great and the good. It's been like that for decades. If you're going to take the millions then take the brickbats. If you can't take the heat don't show up or find another profession. Chris Rock was just doing his job and if Hollywood has any sense left in it at all should react strongly in his defence and the defence of all comedians. Yes, I'd go with that situational and old school line too. If someone came up to your wife in a normal scenario and started slagging her off, certainly there might be a call to put them in their place in no uncertain fashion, but I agree that in a setting where there are light hearted digs at a whole host of individuals, acting like this comes across as unhinged and bang out of order. I get how this is a difficult one to address as a moment shouldn't define the individual and Will Smith generally does come across as a nice guy. But his behaviour and missing a clear opportunity (his speech) to apologise to instead excuse and attempt to indirectly blame Chris Rock for what happened looks horrendous. I expect we'll see a committee written 'heartfelt' apology in the next day or two.

Edited by BlueJay (28 Mar 2022 7.46pm) Agree, it's weird that the acceptance speech went ahead as he clearly wasn't in the right frame of mind.....then again perhaps the organisers were still in shock themselves.....quite incredible to watch it play out. Smith owes Rock here, if that were a member of the public slapping him then they would be looking at some jail time.

They should have hired The Rock instead of Chris. He might have reacted differently.

I'm hearing that Smith might have to return his Oscar.
