Isn't it funny that our season has become defined by a game against Watford. Not for the first time either!

How many games have Brighton lost at home? I believe 4 after yesterday, the point at Amex was very good. Look at the teams who have not beaten Brentford away. Admittedly I was peed off after Norwich, as 3 points definitely there for the taking Sorry I should have been clearer - what I meant was that we didn't beat Brighton or Brentford at Selhurst either and the cumulative effect is that it puts more pressure on us to eek points from games like yesterday. Chelsea were between the "World Cup" and a Champions League knockout tie so as good a time to play them as you could hope for. I feel a little sorry for Viera in that key moments of the game aren't going our way and we're making mistakes. But we've not created enough clear cut chances in the last few games and don't look like keeping clean sheets either. Next Saturday we play Burnley and Dyche has already shared with the media that he targeted us aerially in the game at Turf Moor.

I think Vieira has areas he can improve, but overall I think he's done a good job. The reality is Zaha takes that chance at the end and most would say yesterday was a good performance. I can barely remember more than one or two performances last season in which I genuinely enjoyed the game, or thought we played well. I love Roy for giving us stability, but so many wins last season almost felt like defeats we were so hard to watch. We're transitioning our entire way of playing and overhauling the squad, so I'm not really sure it's fair to be too harsh on Vieira given where we're at. Thankfully I think Parish and the board are pretty supportive of their managers and don't have Watford-like reflexes when it comes to a difficult run. Arteta received patience when the results were poor and that's paid dividends for Arsenal, the same with the Austrian at Southampton when they were getting whopped, while Potter had a similar first couple of seasons to Vieira at Brighton. This isn't a Pardew type situation where there seems to be no direction and general chaos. I also think Vieira seems to have the trust of the players, which is important. Of course it's frustrating to be losing points so late again and that needs to be addressed, but I do feel like Vieira is the right man for us. Personally I'm still enjoying watching Palace more than I have in years because we actually have control of the ball more often and have some talented players. If we can just find that composure in the 18-yard box we can start winning again.

I keep drawing parallels to the Brighton of two years ago when they transitioned from Hughton to Potter. They only just stayed up the first season and were only a bit more comfortable last season. Staying in this league is still the clubs No.1 priority. And it could be that we only just achieve that. Hopefully we will and then we can get on with the further work required to strengthen the squad in the summer. We aren't far away from being a useful side. I think it puts into perspective the work that Roy Hodgson put in with a negligible transfer budget and an aging squad.

Hopefully we have improved aerially since Burnley away. Sounds like Trekkers may be played

Don't waste your time with jealousy. Sometimes your ahead, sometimes your behind, the race is long. But in the end it's only with yourself!! |

We left the Oval at lunch just before lunch to get down to Selhurst that day. Devon Malcom had endured bouncers and he was fired up taking 9 wickets in the afternoon. Darren Pitcher made his debut for us at left back and had a horrid afternoon but he did a bit better that season in a tenacious midfield role.
Enjoying getting up later and not having someone who knows better than me (apart from the missus of course). |

We have a dodgy run every season. We are in it and we need a win. And in the next two games or we start looking very shakey. But we also usually have good run of 3 or 4 wins on the trot which hasn't happened yet. One of things that has worked very much in our favour over recent seasons is that we have regularly picked managed wins against teams around and below us. This is not happening either.
