He's come off a serious injury, one that it often takes three- to six months to fully recover from and get back to pace (and we've all seen he's not really all that close to the "real Eze" in the past few weeks). Playing 90 minutes every week somewhere like QPR for the rest of the season might be far better for both Palace and Ebs in the long-term, then getting him back firing on all cylinders in the summer, than would be 10-15 minutes here and there off the bench for the rest of the season (and he's clearly not up to 90 minutes in the Prem right now). If we have a ready-made replacement in VdB then everyone wins; Ebs builds himself back up more quickly; we get Ebs back in top shape for next season, and VdB gets a shop window with a point to prove for whatever happens next in his career. I don't see a downside.

If he's not fit enough for us then he's not fit for anyone else, plus you lose the ability to control his recovery. I often agree with your opinions, but this one is plain wrong in my view.

I suppose it's a question of how this would be put to Eze AND whether any Championship club would take him in order to rehabilitate him for our benefit. Personally, I don't see it happening (but I would like to see van De Beek here. Edited by doombear (26 Jan 2022 11.55am)

Edited by doombear (26 Jan 2022 11.55am) I would think (just a guess) that QPR, on the fringes of and pressing for promotion and where Eze is rightly a legend would grab the opportunity to take him back for the rest of the season with open arms. Let's be honest, if he regains form in the Championship, puts QPR over the top and they go up, they benefit just as much as us and they may well see it as a no-risk proposition because of that. I'm not saying I want this to happen; I'm just trying to take an objective view of the situation and I can see an argument that it'd be a good thing. This is the key; I think too many people here and elswhere do little but argue their own opinion. Sometimes you have to go beyond what you think and consider the alternatives. Bringing in VdB and loaning out Eze, both for the rest of the season only, is an idea that is not without merit. That is not to say I think we should do it; simply that there's enough upside to make it worth considering. Edited by sydtheeagle (26 Jan 2022 12.48pm)

Very mixed opinions on this deal. He is obviously a quality player who’s been wrecked by Utd (plenty of them so won’t hold it against him). I just can’t see where he fits into a midfield 3. I think his desire to get forward will clash with Gallagher and leave our holding midfielder with too much to cover. We desperately need a dominant destroyer like Kouyate but 10 years younger. Gravenbach/ Alvarez at Ajax or Kamara at Marseille would be lovely but would cost £20m minimum.

Schlupp is far from the enforcer we definatly need, I think kouyate is that player, but van de beek offers a better option for schlupps roll. An improvement even though its maybe not suited to how we could probably be tactically stronger.

Clearly not his favoured position and we’ve been dominated in midfield by Brighton, Liverpool and, for 45mins, Millwall. Gallagher is undoubtedly the attacking mid, kouyate the holder and then it’d be one of VDB, Hughes, Jimmy Mac and Schlupp. Wouldn’t be unhappy with VDB on loan but I really don’t think it’s a position that we are desperate to fill unlike RB..

We have deployed Edouard out wide on the left, but Zaha also plays in this position.Eze has been played in this position but I don't view him as a wide player , he is far more effective playing more centrally, perhaps in a No 10 role. Finally, I agree with you about the right-back position which is becoming more concerning. Edited by Willo (27 Jan 2022 12.05am)

The thing for me is options. And Ideally having enough decent options that if we have some injuries we are not forced to play Luka/Jiro/Jeff in CM. DvdB was a serious talent a year or so back, it would be madness not to have a look at him. If he does what Lingard did for WH last season (also keeping new signing Benrahma out of the team) that would be good thing. Who knows if he has a great end to the season he might want to stay. For the first time in a long time we options in the forward positions (losing Wilf and Ayew to AFCON hasn't killed us). To be a top team we need to have options everywhere, so we shouldn't shy away from signing players as it might hold back Eze (as much as I love the guy). Connor is not an out and out Attacking Mid e.g. he is not a 10. He's a box-box player that has that Lampard ability to get in the right place at the right time. Donny is similar, but potentially a bit more of a playmaker. I don't see why you couldn't play him and DvdB together. They would of course need to develop a relationship and the holding player would need to be more disciplined. Eze will need to be eased back into the fold in the right moments in the right games. Macca unfortunately is coming to the end, we might get another 5-10 games out of him this season, but I doubt it would be much more.

Wilf back for next match though...
