Right, but those are not companies - if a portion of the public take issue with something you say and want to send you death threats, I'm not sure how you prevent that? Obviously the people sending death threats should be investigated criminally, but beyond that I'm not sure what the expectation would be. So for you it has to be companies? So are you saying that 'cancel culture' doesn't exist unless companies publicly refuse to employ someone because of their views? Andrew Lawrence is a recent example that was discussed on here. I agree she shouldn’t receive threats, but that’s a legal matter, so beyond that I’m not sure why you’re asking for. Where did I mention censoring people’s responses? I said she should be able to express her views without receiving threats, which is a point you seem to agree with Edited by Spiderman (22 Dec 2021 8.35am)

Given that her views / statement was so publicly aired I would imagine that companies that were thinking of using her (in whatever commercial / literary capacity) may well take another look at the prospective candidates on their list, rather than risk being subjected to being tarred by the same brush, in effect being found guilty by association. Quite frankly - its great for her that she made her fortune before this happened. Those that continue to work with her will have to understand that there may well be some unwanted media "fall out" down the road & need to consider the risk / was it worth it.

He can tweet his outrage at JK Rowling, and she can ignore it. I don't understand this point - surely at individual level, it's just two people with a difference of view? Once you start involving companies, and employment, as with your Andrew Lawrence example (and the lecturer I referenced), then certainly there is a conversation to be had, but the word is just lazily banded about now.

I accept the point that it is a phrase that gets 'banded about'. I think that's fair, this tends to happen with buzz phrases. It's currently used as a stick to beat progressivism, however 'Cancel culture' has always happened, the only difference to now is the scale and the people doing it....mostly due to more pressure groups and activists encouraged by the greater ease of communication via social media and hence feared PR affects on companies and even small employers....who thus bend the knee far more readily. Warner Bros have tried to erase JK Rowling from the latest Harry Potter spin off trailer but they can't because she owns the rights and shrewd business woman she is she has them by the short and curlies. WB were happy to heavily promote her as the author of the books now she is relegated to a minor mention. And she wasn't been invited to the HP reunion and the kids she made stars have disowned her. Meanwhile some poor woman who was part of the Scout movement went through 2 years of hell bullying and abuse all totally at odds with what she said. The Scout movement has now apologised but I hope she sues the hell out of them. Cancel culture is very much alive and well.

Television news on the other hand is massively leftist as is entertainment....before the launch of GB News there wasn't one non leftist news channel in the UK.....Yet we have a Tory party in government with an 80 seat majority. The only political influence Murdoch seems to exact nowadays is Sky News Australia. Edited by Stirlingsays (22 Dec 2021 11.01am)

When is the author of a novel ever particularly involved in the marketing of a spin-off film? When have WB ever 'heavily promoted her as the author of the books' - I don't recall ever seeing her name mentioned in or around the movies beyond a generic reference. Feels like a load of fuss over nothing.

Your last sentence is bordering on ridiculous to be honest.
