A 5-0 whitewash was likely before the Ashes began, was then highly likely after the 1st test and now with the end of the 2nd test looming is pretty much inevitable.

They had absolutely no preparation before the 1st test.

Some of their squad selections were baffling, in terms of Dan Lawrence, Ollie Pope, Zak Crawley, Craig Overton and have time and again not showed they are upto Test level on consistent basis. Burns seems to pull out an innings when he needs to save his spot.

Spinning options are very limited, Leach was taken to cleaners on the 1st test.

We struggle when we have an English coach. Our success over the past 20 years has come under Duncan Fletcher, Andy Flower and Trevor Bayliss. We should have gone for someone like Tom Moody or Jason Gillespie.

Thought he looked world class a year or two ago. He seems to have imploded.

Who would you have picked instead of the three batsmen that you named bearing in mind that the England Lions are also in Australia and got slaughtered in their match against Australia A

Surely Craig Overton is only in the squad due to injuries to Jofra Archer and Ollie Stone

Currently we seem unable to field very well and too many of our top order batsmen cannot bat at this level and add to that Stokes is injured.
I would suggest when the Aussies are up 4-0 they will party and we will win the final test.
Joe Root is a great batsman but a crap Captain.
Not sure where we go from here but changes are needed throughout the team and the backroom staff.

I definitely would have had Liam Liovingstone in there and said just out there and play as you normally do. You look at someone like Ollie Pope, tries to play a patient game and still gets out for low scores. Even if Livingstone hits 30 or 40 before getting out, it's better than what we have already.

The players are just the end product of the system.

It's the system's structure, pitches and its administration that produces those players. If the system is B standard, then the produced players will just be the best from within that level.

We do not have a system that's ruthlessly designed to create the best English test side regularly competing with the top sides home and away....even though the high majority of people paying into it want that more than anything else.

If England were to take a more radical approach, they could do worse than bring in half, or more, of the one day side.
I presume the long term problem is the amount and popularity of limited overs cricket over County cricket. Not sure how they could solve it. Weekend games perhaps, day/night? That would take away from the limited overs schedule, however.

That has been tried and failed spectacularly. It's easy to whack the ball all over the place when the bowlers and fielders are restricted in what they can do but "proper" cricket sorts the men from the boys.

Jason Roy was tried out as a test opener and failed miserably and Eoin Morgan doesn't even get in the Middlesex side for four day cricket

Good captain though, à la Mike Brearley?

True. Perhaps it might be worth a try

It’s been frustrating as there have been periods where we have showed that we can compete. The bowling has been been alright, but we’ve dropped straightforward catches. Selection has been poor. Broad should have bowled in Brisbane and Wood in Adelaide.

Batting wise the openers are struggling, but Crawley is no better. A long boring Sibley innings is what we need, but he’s out of form and back home. Malan and Root have done well, Stokes I believe is getting slightly better with each innings. Buttler and Woakes have shown that they can do it but needs to be more consistent.

Pope has been a big disappointment. He’ll have a great England career but I’d get him out of the firing line for Melbourne and bring in Bairstow.

I’d go Bairstow and Wood in for Pope and Anderson. Was thinking of bringing in Bess but both Root and Malan can do their bit as part time spinners.

We have to be at our absolute best to get something from the series and so far we haven’t. I don’t think it will be 5-0 but we’ll be comfortably beaten.

Although Australia & NZ Rugby pulled out of the 2021 world cup due to be held over here because of Covid concerns -

Does a World Cup have similar levels of necessary / unnecessary tours to an Ashes one ?

Not sure how you can say its an "unnecessary" tour - it's the Ashes after all.

The extra restrictions are being imposed by Cricket Australia on both sides and not by the Federal or State governments here. They seem common sense to me - no autographs, no fan 'selfies, no public gyms, no indoor dining outside of the hotel, no haircuts. Can still dine outside, being summer here.

The Melbourne and Sydney tests are played over a 13 day period with a few more before hand in Melbourne so its not for a long period.

CA simply trying to ensure the tour is completed.
