Great thread...

I'm so happy watching matches this year. The last couple years, I'd be dreading how we would look. Even when we won, we were usually dominated, and I'd be pissed off. This year, I feel like we can give anyone a go.

To be fair to Roy, PV was allowed to spend like a drunken sailor compared to past windows. On the other hand, players that Roy brought in, Camarasa, Sorloth, Meyer (? Did Roy sign Meyer), were either crap, or poorly/never used.

I'm actually amazed how we went from old, stale, boring, painful to watch, to much younger, exciting, and fun to watch, all in the span of a few months. And we have yet to see the best of Eze, Olise, Hughes, Ferguson (maybe), and even getting Clyne back should help.

I feel like if all goes as planned, we should easily be a 10-13th place team this year. With luck, could be 8-10. Of course, with bad luck, we could still end up in a relegation battle, but I'm unusually optimistic about this squad.

2017 Feb. (Van Aanholt) Palace 1 - 0 Middlesboro
2018 Jan. (Sako) Palace 1 - 0 Burnley
2019 May (Batshuayi, Batshuayi, OG, Van Aanholt, Townsend) Palace 5 - 3 Bournemouth
2020 Feb. (Van Aanholt) Palace 1 - 0 Newcastle

The thing that was most encouraging for me is that we stuck with the plan. I would have understood if after conceding 2 whist being so dominant we would have been a bit less brave, or started lumping it more. But to their credit they stuck to it.

It feels like the team are bought in to PV’s plan, and they are giving it their all. Vs under Hodgson where they are just doing what they are told.

My biggest worry is what happens if one of the CB’s get injured. They are vital to this working.

Probably why we had Tomkins Kelly Kouyate Clyne on the bench yesterday. Maybe not so polished but excellent cover.

I think Tomkins has been a tad unfortunate,he is a real goal threat as well as being a great centre back.

Tomkins has been a key defender for us in the past but as yet seems to have failed to show he can play the PV way. He was poor in the few opportunities he had in pre-season. It's a question as to whether, in training, he has shown he can play out from the back. I expect Kouyate to get the nod if Andersen or Guehi get injured or lose form badly.

Remind me why we got rid of him (and kept Ayew)?

Townsend was hugely underappreciated. And certainly by Hodgson. More technical ability than the rest of the squad put together, and that includes Zaha, since Cabaye left. One poster wrote of THAT GOAL at Citeh: 'Even a blind squirrel finds a nut once in a while.' Unbelievable.

I wouldn't be building a defence around Tomkins as he rarely manages 5 consecutive games.

Decent enough, but too injury prone.

Plus at 32 he is no spring chicken. Great back up though.

But in PV's system? I have grave doubts about that.

Great defender, but so was Cahill. But neither of them (IMO) are capable of playing the way we are playing at present. The are both slightly old fashioned defenders. Defend first and let the others play the ball.

At most goal kicks they are receiving the ball a couple of yards from VG....not sure I'd be comfortable seeing JT, CK or MK do that. And to be honest I think we'd end up seeing the ball go long a lot more.

He certainly couldn't fill in for Andersen who has been sublime with his distribution and I rather doubt he could manage the breaks upfield that both Andersen and Guehi put in when they carry the ball out and occasionally keep going.

That said I'm not sure we'd be defensively any weaker for him in and Wardy has shown an ability in a ball playing back 4 that I hadn't really expected. So while we'd be weakened I'm not sure it would be that serious - not least with Mili apparently back on song and perhaps able to take on the role of "playmaker" from the back.

There is some naivety from PV here which needs to get nipped in the bud.

It’s strange that he is showing this lack of nous as he has been in and around the premier league for a long old time.

Kouyate is a poor passer of the ball and he doesn’t really help to defend a lead in that regard,. We barely touched the ball for the last 10 minutes and just invited a poor Arsenal side to pepper us. Also bringing another defender on for a striker is bound to have us sit deeper.

Maybe under Wenger years ago this stuff worked but it’s now cost us 4 points.

We are playing far better football than I have seen in a very, very long time, but the nous level needs to go up.

I won’t be watching next time we are defending a lead in the 95th minute, don’t think I can stomach it.

Trump lost. Badly. Hahahahahahaha.
