Watching Sussex yesterday I was quite impressed with George Garton- left arm quick. He looks to have a bit of bite to his game.
There was a nice moment in the game when Archie Lenham, 16 year old leg- spinner, son of Neil & grandson of Les, dropped a catch then was given the next over and took a wicket with his first ball.

I know that Garton played at England under 19s, good to hear he's doing well.

First ball for Lenham, now that's some intro.

I've said it many times over the years but the level of money paid to the ECB and the standard of cricket produced from it isn't value for money.

These guys are simply paid too well for their jobs. There is a softness there.

It's amazing that the guys who are centrally contracted and effectively work for "England Cricket" being paid up to £1m in the process are allowed to miss a series as they are resting after having played in a tournament for someone else.

I wonder how the three New Zealanders who also played in the IPL but still managed to turn out for the country feel about our poor souls.

Was Chris Woakes who was in the IPL but didn't actually play, asked whether he wanted to miss this series as I'm sure he would have wanted to play

One of the guys on TMS was saying that this 2 match series was kind of "hastily arranged" & had to be shoehorned in between something which was why it was only a 2 match series.

And yes your right- NZ deserved more.

Really why only a 2-match series?

I am just up for Joe and the lads to re-group and go again, with some of the established test match players back.

NZ are certainly worthy of more as well.

The performance was disappointing, New Zealand played well and they were due a result after the T20 Final. The four extras off Stokes’ bat were accidental but Kane Williamson accepted the result with great dignity.

I suspect some coronavirus issues in all fairness.

These are all pertinent points, and maybe they are being made in the print media somewhere but I feel not enough.....it's been an issue in world cricket since the IPL but I think the power balance has been allowed to swing too far from Test cricket because of the money god.

Like you suggest, these cricketers are very nicely paid and most English cricket fans value the test team over the hit and run stuff.

Who is saying this stuff in the public eye? Boycott had his issues but climbing the greasy pole wasn't one of them. As a commentator I think the public have missed out on his type....the guy who will speak his mind without fear of favour.

Test Cricket is dying out, in favour of the slogging. I expect it to fully die out if they don't become more relevant.

Crazy isn't it.

I must admit the future of cricket is hard to predict.

I may be wrong but it's the one sport that seems to me to not be played to the standard it was in the past. Fielding and fitness have improved. However, there were better bowlers, in particular, in the past. They were genuinely quick and hostlie. Correspondingly there were batsmen who flourished. Even the Aussie team of 20/30 years ago would thrash the current side - and they're one of the best.
The West Indies teams of the past would easily beat any team today, probably within a day or two. The best current side are India but don't get me started on their pitch doctoring - which they don't need to do, as they are plenty good enough. However, they just can't help themselves.
Think of players like Pope, Stones, Crawley - they are nowhere near the standard of the seventies and eighties sides, yet have had a thousand times the coaching.

Yep, I think it's been lots of small changes all done for practical...or let's be honest for money reasons that has ultimately reduced the quality of cricket...not just with us but around the world.

As I know the English game much better than any other I think the biggest long term reductions in quality was by changing to covered pitches....which has reduced the ability of our batsman to cope better with movement and the exclusivity deal with Sky, which has reduced the numbers of youth who regularly watched the game.

There should have been better solutions for both, but that's what happens when the guardians of the game don't guard it.

Watching Chris Gayle or A. B. De Villiers in full flow is thrilling but
T20 is so weighted in the batsman’s favour; shortened boundaries, fielding restrictions, limited short bowling, free hits, anything remotely wide is called, bowlers don’t have time to set batsmen up, limited number of catchers behind the wicket or close in, no time for conditions to change, reverse swing very unlikely… there are others but none of this helps trying to bat for two days.

Kept in its place it could have worked....given primacy it's been awful longer term as some predicted it would.
