Little Roy hit his slingshot and smacked big Arteta right in the chequebook goolies. All the Arsenal fans living in SE25 were crying, innit Blud. Edited by PalazioVecchio (14 Jan 2021 11.33pm) To be fair the analogy of David and Goliath is a good one, mostly when people use David and Goliath it is the smaller team playing with hearth and courage to overcome the bigger mighty foe. What is overlooked in the story is they were allowed to choose their weapons, David didn’t choose a sword and go toe to toe with Goliath to show his bravery he used his brains picked a slingshot and was able to hit goliath at distance nullifying his power. All done and dusted before Goliath could get in range.

Everyone is well aware of the age problem. We have 18 contracts plus Batshuayi's loan expiring at the end of the season. There are 30 contracted season players. A manager can't get by with 12 players. It would cost well in excess of £100m to replace them, we'd have to hope none of them are flops and expect them to gel as a team straight away. Even our owners wanted to inject that money, FFP wouldn't allow it. Kelly, Hennessey, Henderson, and Wickham are all surplus to requirements. That would free up around £10m/year in wages. We've got a glut of centre backs, but can't let them all go. A choice between Sakho(30) Dann(33) and Cahill(35) needs to be made. Let two go, replace one, which will cost £20m. McCarthy hasn't really seen enough action to warrant a new deal and we could probably get by without him. If we let any more go, we'd be very exposed.
As to our glut of CBs, four of them have been injury prone this last year, hence the need to play Kouyate in that role. Assuming Woods is deemed ready to step up (I think he is from what I've seen of him in the U23s) then we can probably get away with offloading two of the three you mention provided we can bring in a younger CB. Personally, I'd keep McCarthy. With Kouyate being used as a CB, that only leaves Luka, Macca and Riederwald as CDMs. If PvA goes (and I suspect he might, especially if Mitchell becomes the clear no. 1 LB) Jairo would need to be the LB back-up.

Not every team is equipped to play the Liverpool/Citeh way etc. Arteta knew full well how we would set up (he no doubt well remembers what we have achieved at the Etihad on our last couple of visits). If you want to remain in the PL, you have to play to your strengths. It may not be pretty, but we're not in a beauty parade.

More expensive players do not guarantee you a better team. The game of football is 11 vs 11. I would be far happier with a team of 11 average players all playing for each other than the best 11 players in the world all playing for themselves. The analogy is nice Ketteridge but it doesn’t take into account that football is a team game and not one for individuals alone.

I agree and I might have stretched the analogy a bit but it is about understanding our strengths and weakness and the strength and weakness of opposition which applies to the team as well as individuals. We are actually (when we do pass well) attempting to play attractive football, there were times against Arsenal where I thought we played some wonderful stuff and have done so much of the time Mr Hodgson has been here, results destroy good performances and too many fans simply fail to understand how much we've changed as a club, watching Andy Thorn and his team mates wasn't very attractive but because we achieved good results with them the performances are not mentioned.

I certainly don’t hate Roy Hodgson, why are you always so dramatic? I hate his style of football and believe he should be doing better - try to keep up. To me, you are just blind to his inefficiencies and in lots of cases make up narratives to support your own agenda. I’m still unsure if you are just on the windup.
