Showing how hard it is to predict how a player will adapt to the PL, as I believe mattteo suggested he was a bargain at 9.5m but he was a flop. So many strikers from abroad seem to struggle to adapt to the PL with expensive examples like Slimani, Musa, Joelinton and Tosun springing to mind. I did, but let's be frank, he wasn't even given chances. May seem like he played a lot of matches for Newcastle without scoring, but they are mostly 1-2 minutes matches when he was sent in at the end and couldn't really create much in not even 200 minutes per season. Maybe you will say that it was his fault in training for not being selected,,but it's mostly just the manager who doesn't apprecuate some players. Like with Salah, de Bruyme or Lukakau at Chelsea with Mourinho. Were they not good enough? De Bruyne went to Wolfsburg and immediately became top assister with over 20 assists in the Bundesliga. No, not their fault, Mourinho just didn't see them. Could be the same with Muto. Plus, he was a center forward or second sttiker ar Mainz and at Newcastle they played him a lot like a winger. From the other examples,I think Musa adapted pretty well, but was used too much as winger. Joelinton never really was that good and was a massive failure by the investment analysts at Newcastle. Slimani, yes,we can say he did not adapt. I notice this mostly at center forwards who don't have much speed and come to English football- remember Soldado.

How can anyone outside of Newcastle FC comment on how he performed in training? Maybe there were other issues, maybe just not good enough. Personally I rate Steve Bruce’s and Mourinho’s assessment of players higher than any poster on here

Fair comment if you ask me.

I wasn't meaning to pick on you btw, I was just highlighting how good stats abroad often doesn't seem to translate to the PL. I agree with you about needing pace. I think that might be why Sorloth struggled, as he seemed slow in all respects from decision making to making runs. Maybe with renewed confidence he has become more intuitive.

Direct match today in Germany which involved 2 young center forwards of great height: Jean Mateta (23) for Mainz and Silas Wamangituka (next month 21) for Stuttgart. Wamangituka used as right winger, not in a central position, scored 1 and assisted 1. He has so far in his career: 22 goals and 11 assists, most from center forward position and most in the 2nd leagues of France and Germany in 4600 minutes, but 1600 of those minutes were as winger. Jean Mateta has 22 goals and assists in 3000 minutes in France's Ligue 2 or in Cup matches. Also 23 goals and assists in 3700 minutes at top level. But he is 2 and a half years older and has had time to make them. Also comes after a very serious injury. Could never play on the wing. Look at this video of Wamangituka: He certainly has 1 speed above Mateta. On the 25 million price of Mateta, I'm sure Stuttgart would let Wamangituka leave, cause he cost them just 7 million. This is a direct comparison that board of Crystal Palace should make. Also, from a direct comparison between Wamangituka at that money and Rhian Brewster, of the same age, Wamangituka looks better.

Do Stuttgart want to sell? Does he want to leave? If not no point in Palace even looking. Regarding his stats compared to Brewster, how do the 2nd divisions in France and Germany compare to the Championship? I have no idea aloud I had to guess I would say nowhere near as difficult and intense

That's why I talked about him compared to the prices mentioned for Mateta or Brewster (over 20 million pounds). Of course Stuttgart don't want to sell at the 7 million they bought him for, but if a Premier League club comes and throws them 25 million for a player, it will surely have them rolling. Just wanted to point out that we're looking at Mateta when in my opinion Wamangituka is the better prospect. About the second leagues from Germany and France, I don't think they're very different from the Championship. Germany has a population of 80 million so a lot of playwrs to chose from, France has about 60 million. The Championship does have a bit more foreign talent brought in, but the very good ones have come from France- Benrahma, Mbeumo etc. Considering they've done more than ok in the Championship....

Muto had 943’ for Newcastle and scored 2 goals. Scored away at Old Trafford and on the league cup. All in all not a great return for £9.5m.

Out of those 900 minutes, they used a player who was center forward as a winger for about 400, not a position from which he could score often. We'll see how he does in his career. I maintain my idea that we should judge players based on what they show on the pitch, not the fact that they qeren't picked by the manager.
