With all these cases at food processing plants here and abroad you have to wonder about hygiene. Aside from the virus what about colds and the flu it does appear that the high rate of infections means someone is not doing their job properly.

At work now we have to appoint a 'Covid representative' in addition to the standard health and safety, fire reps etc. I'm not sure if it's the same in the UK. It looks like some Covid reps are going to be taking the rap.

Yes, it sounds like a fall guy role. Covid-19 spreads so easily, the job's a thankless task. Especially when most of the suggestions they could make that would cut down the spread would also likely negatively impact the business.

Germany expands local lockdown into second district after new outbreak linked to meat plant:

[Link]

From the report:
More than 1,500 workers in the Rheda-Wiedenbruck plant were confirmed to have contracted the virus over the weekend – a figure that coincided with a leap in the nation’s rate of reproduction for the virus – or R number – from 1.06 on Friday to 2.88 on Sunday, before settling at a current estimate from the Robert Koch Institute for public health of 2.76...

It comes as a number of concentrated outbreaks are reported in meatpacking centres and slaughterhouses worldwide – including in the US and UK, two of the nations worst impacted by the virus. While theories on the reason behind this range from the lack of distancing possible in factory settings, poor employment conditions and cold temperatures, industry representatives in the UK told The Independent the matter is a “mystery”.

The factories are chilled

As a result the virus doesn't die naturally at the same speed as usual. And the workers are very close together. A recipe for transmission if anyone has the disease. It shouldn't be passed on to customers through eating, no sign food carries it. But in a freezer the virus can survive up to 2 years, so be very careful touching frozen meat.

The packaging is the carrier. Wipe down all packets and boxes and mail. Wash all fresh fruit and veg.
Wipe down cans and bottles. And stop licking windows maple.

[Link]

There have been so many outbreaks in slaughterhouses across the US and in Europe which have led to sickness and even deaths of of workers that the conditions need honest investigating. Local communities in Germany and America have been shut down too. Even the outbreak in Leeds was kept hidden from the local community.

Health officials were closely monitoring clusters of new cases linked to food processing plants, amid concerns about potential outbreaks similar to those in France and the US. In the US, as many as 25,000 meat and poultry workers have reportedly contracted Covid-19, with at least 93 deaths.'
