Not apologising for anyone. I never saw Jackson play as he was just before my time however my Grandad used to tell me he was brilliant. Less of the lip mate and stop acting such a pr@ck. Behave yourself.
As a woman, I can step aside, or step up my game... |

Nah, not intended as a wind-up, though I am only dicking about. It just struck me as amusing that Jacko is held in such incredibly high regard - I'm quite sure deservedly so - and yet the first time I've seen anything at all of him (or at least realised it) he's being regularly beaten by efforts he should've done a lot better with. And it occured that WH, for a terrific current example, often gets a dog's abuse on here from some for nothing even approaching such performance. (I appreciate it's selective and blah blah blah, I really do, I was just staggered that John Jackson - that's THE John Jackson - wasn't 12 feet tall and dismissively swatting away ferocious efforts with an only vaguely interested gigantic member.) (Anyhow, this shouldn't derail this thread from the appreciation of a very good piece of work.)
Fair play. The older you get the more you realise the impossibility of explaining how good some players were. Jacko is hard to describe - he just WAS. To me it’s like trying to describe Don Rogers or Vince Hilaire.

Great watch. I was at so many of those games and it was fantastic to watch it over again. What a time to be a Palace fan. Happy Days.

Supported Palace for over 69 years since the age of 7 and have seen all the ups and downs and will probably see many more ups and downs before I go up to the big football club in the sky. |

Behave yourself. A few old clips won't do, Jackson was one of the main reasons we survived four seasons in div 1 back then, international quality but in a era of banks, clemence, shilton, Stepney, Corrigan and Bonetti - so he never had a sniff of the England squad, didn't see him too many times but he had real presence, bossed the area, made very few mistakes and was a great shot stopper, and most people who have see him and Martyn give Jacko the nod - one of our all-time greatest ever players, an absolute legend central to our rise from the lower leagues.

That’s true. There was also Tony Waiters, Gordon West, Phil Parkes, Ron Springett, Jimmy Rimmer and a some others around at the time.

Thoroughly enjoyed the film, exciting times. Just a shame nobody has any footage of the 4-1 Ipswich win (including THAT Jim Cannon goal) that gave us top spot, albeit briefly, this time 39 years ago.

quote=Eustace H. Plimsoll;3483983] I was horrified to view some of the showing of John 'Johnty' Jackson. Several of the efforts that beat him would unquestionably have been comfortably dealt-with by WH. - quote WH showed his usual form today against Arsenal - absolutely clueless at corners resulting in 2 goals ! Quote - I was never lucky enough to witness his quality live however the evidence makes it perfectly clear to everyone that his reputation is undeserved ....... quote The only think perfectly clear is your extremely poor judgement !!

And great to see all those marvellous Hy Money photos again. Have them in her book "Hy on Palace", but they gave an extra dimension to this documentary.
