But which club has triggered the release clause OR is the fact that Brentford failed to get promotion that has activated it? It may also be a question of whether any clubs are willing to offer MORE than £18 million.

You could have 5 clubs who meet the release clause, then it comes down to wages and his personal preference.

It will surely be his own release clause if not promoted?
We need to buy and quickly.
If we miss out on this lad through dithering I will be furious.
Get on the phone, offer the money and agree terms and get him a Palace shirt.
He will be a great asset and will appreciate in value.
I am not holding my breath though but this could be a season ticket not being renewed failure.

Has he been spotted in the Sainsbury's car park yet ? Reckon it will take 200, not £100,000's but pages for us to sign him.

With a release clause of £18m then that is all that has to be paid to Brentford so it will be about selling the club to him and probably giving him a signing on fee on top of great wages.
It shouldn't be too difficult for us to do given he has scored more goals in one game this season than our own centre forward has in dozens of them!
I suspect that this will be a saga though and that West Ham will get him.

Is he actually any good? He only scored 21 goals in 68 games at Exeters level. Is that a £18m player? He didn't lookal that great last night against Fulham..

But Brentford don't have to accept a lower price. I can see us trying to shave a few million off and someone like Villa coming in and saying they'll pay the full release amount and we'll lose out yet again.

If we really want him I suspect we will need to pay the full £18 million.

I think Dean Smith signed Watkins when manager of Brentford

Because we dither and won't offer a sensible price so others come in and do the business instead and we're left with those that nobody else really wants.

Went for Watkins last year when his release clause was £10m, guess what we tried to negotiate down, quelle surprise

According to Sky Sport, an £18m release clause is 'wide of the mark' .

Who knows? Certainly I don't!

But in what position? (I don't know, but suspect it was either out wide or as a no 10). What I do know is that he was given the striker role at Brentford after Maupay went to the Weed and scored 26 goals in this last season (25 in the regular - one behind Mitrovic and 1 goal in the semi-final of the play-offs). As others have stated, he's versatile in that he can play out wide or as a no 10 as well at CF.
He was well-shackled yesterday as were the other members of Brentford's forward line. I give credit to Parker for that (would consider him as a replacement for Roy in due course). IMO, Watkins was excellent, though, against Swansea in the semi-final home leg.

Last nights game threw a lot of light on just how good or not as the case may be , all of the touted Brentford, players actually are under the kind of pressure they would get in the Premier ,week in week out.
Fulham were very good in that respect , and no one was able to impress . Have watched Watkins ,several times , he is promising ,but for me £20 mill is to much , he could prove ordinary in the Premier, At the values they place on all the rest , they can keep them and probably will.
