I’m pretty sure anorexia is a proven medical condition but I’m not so sure liking food to much is although I’m happy to be proved wrong.. You’re right, of course but overeating can sometimes also be caused by psychological problems. Should one condition get more sympathy than the other?

I agree with this. What has got me thinking is who would determine if they are obese and should be left to die. Would there be a weigh bridge in all NHS buildings and a red light flashes and all their medications are taken away and sent on there way to die. Mr Buerk is living up to his name. A figure shrouded in a dark, hooded robe and carrying a scythe!

Increase tax on fast foods, processed, Sugars, booze etc. Take it to smoking levels. Subsidise the cost of healthier foods.
Edited by JL85 (08 Aug 2019 2.03pm) I was about the disagree because these things are largely a tax on the poor, but 'if' money from that was used to subsidise healthier foods I think I'd actually be in favour to be honest.

Anorexia is clearly a very serious mental illness manifesting itself physically. On the other end of the scale, there are certainly limited conditions where people feel an incredible hungry 24/7, but I see your point in that gluttony essentially is a personal failing and a choice. I still wouldn't take away any NHS options though. Everyone has challenges in life and if people want to help themselves, the health services should be there for them.

It’s certainly a talking point although I agree the NHS is there for us all... even those that don’t pay tax/national insurance etc. No matter there faults it’s one of the wonderful things about living in Britain

i know some will now say you can no you can't this has been proven go and eat high amounts of fat it's a struggle which is why some people will even find it hard to eat twice a day but carbs you can do it easily in fact this is the problem you can load up on them and few hours later you feel hungry again which is why people adopted the 3-5 times eating a day. plus it takes a lot of over eating to become massively obese it doesn't happen over just a month or even few months. Anorexia is mental disorder which leads to becoming a physical one. Originally posted by dollardays

If you are that poor why are you spending money on the likes of alcohol and tobacco. healthier foods are affordable doesn't cost much to buy meat but no people wont go for that they would rather go for the chips and processed pre made meals thinking they are good value. A person on say JSA receives £73 a week which is to cover basic living now you hear those people moan can't live on that wrong an adult can easily if they buy correct food shopping per week would be around £25 leaving £48 so that still leaves enough to cover some public transport and few other bits regarding hygiene. In the States hundreds of thousands of people go bankrupt each year paying for essential healthcare and that can never be a just outcome.

I’m assuming by your username you live in the states??.. I have a very good friend whom I grew up with here who now lives in the states and he echoes what you say... He genuinely says we don’t know how lucky we are with the NHS as I’ve heard horror stories from him regarding medical care in the US and the different types of insurance you get ripped off with..

Edited by grumpymort (09 Aug 2019 12.40am) It still feels wrong to introduce a kind of morality clause into medical treatment whereby fat people are deemed “bad” so don’t deserve to live.

There are valid criticisms to make concerning many types of lifestyle however this form of social Darwinism is far too harsh for rich countries to enact.
