The reason why Trump succeeded is he refused to apologize and had the guts to go after his opponents at full tilt. Bolsonaro and Salvini are similar in that respect. Don't think even Farage has it in him to do that so unless someone turns up who can I'm not hopeful that we avoid major civil unrest. Our natural instinct for / culture of, politeness is our undoing.
As the demographic map shifts and more of the country get to experience the reality instead of the fantasy the polarisation will increase. That much I'm pretty sure about.....what happens outside of that is more speculative. Edited by Stirlingsays (04 Jun 2019 12.25pm)

I think the leadership contest will become clearer now that the Tory party has changed the rules. The vanity candidates "Surry's favourite son" will withdraw as they can't get the required number of MPs. We should be down to the deadly duo within the next 2 weeks.

Under the new rules, candidates will need to win 5% of votes (16 MPs) in the first ballot and 10% (32 MPs) in the second to proceed. If all the candidates exceed this threshold, the person with the fewest votes will be eliminated, a process that will continue in subsequent rounds until only two remain. The first ballot will take place on Thursday 13 June, with further rounds of voting scheduled for 18, 19 and 20 of June.Party members will get to question the final two candidates in a series of hustings beginning in the week of 22 June.

Anyone good put there doesn’t want to be an MP first. That’s the problem. Or they get moulded or damaged or restricted if they do become an MP.

It seems to me that Boris' main challenge was getting enough MPs onside to get into the top two. His numbers are looking very healthy now though, so it's hard to imagine that he won't be top two, and become the next PM. Unless people switching allegiances during the process. What's your read of it?

Apropos the numbers, as candiadtes are eliminated their supporters switch their votes to someone else so it's a fluid situation. Edited by Willo (05 Jun 2019 4.59pm)

Yes, in the past the switches after elimination has certainly shaken things up. The level of support at this stage is certainly looking very good for him though I'd say.
