The issue we have is that we’ve repeatedly failed in the transfer market. Most clubs hit on a couple of players occasionally which they can sell for a profit. We’ve not sold anybody outside of Bolasie for ages. Exclusively signing and not propping up the balance sheet with the odd big player sale is not sustainable. It’s the main reason I’m accepting we’ll sell AWB. As good as he is, he’s a right back and they aren’t the most pivotal position on the pitch. As much as I love AWB if I had the choice of AWB and no signings or starting Ward at RB and reinvesting say £60m on a new central midfielder and striker I’d take the latter.

I agree. If Utd or anyone come in with an offer 50 mil + then we will sell. I would take 50 mil plus Fosu-Mensah for AWB. The only trouble is I have no confidence in our talent spotting ability to not waste it.

Thing is, we chop and change, which is expensive. We get in Holloway, we go up. He signs players, how he came about them is a whole different story. Pulis comes in, does a remarkable job - he too signs players, Dann, Ledley and Henenrsey and the job is done we have a respectable finish. He then wants to implement his team - Campbell, Kelly. Then he's gone - Warnock comes in, very different manager. He brings in players like Zaha, Fryers and McArthur. Then we get Pardew and a whole different breed of player comes in. The likes of Cabaye, Wickham, Mutch, Souare, McCarthy, followed by Tomkins, Townsend, Mandana, Remy. Then Fat Sam - PVA, Luca, Sakho, Schlupp. So already, it's a mix and match. How many of these players were veiwed as potential first teamers and paid so, but gone AWOL. Suffice to say, this summer should be the result of a long hard scouting period where players are sold, moved on, replaced. Chopping and changing styles cost money but that hasn’t happened at Palace, if you were to group every premier league manager along a line from organised and defensive to free flowing and creative then Warnock, Alladyce and Pulis would all be up one end along Dyche and Mourinho. Hodgson would be probably not be too far along . With Pardew we still had an effective counter attacking team until he tried to turn us into a more possession based attacking team and the defence fell apart. We offered Benteke and Sakho (and Wilf) massive pay packets that we are struggling to afford Hence 9th highest wage bill compared to bottom half financial clout. I do agree with a lot of what Ketteridge just said. Our squad has steadily got better and with better finishing we would be several places higher up the table. It is, as he says, 'small margins'.

Very good post, however, That bit in bold... What this has done, and we can include RH's purchases in that(Meyer, Kouyate, Guaita) is mean that we have a lot of players, which have come in on higher wages. I fear that this window we are going to be clearing of the deadwood with no dramatic Spending, save for some urgent replacements should we sell any 1st teamers. RH will be here next season as a steadying influence, and to give us the best chance at survival. We will then look to reinvest in the squad - potentially with a new longer term manager.
i agree with you, thats why i feel 1 of 3 things will happen:

Don’t understand how a team that’s so dependent on one player can be underachieving. The squad is poor from an attacking perspective if you take Wilf out and IMO probably relegation fodder. Can’t think of a team so heavily reliant on one individual.

It's precisely because the team is over reliant on Zaha that there is an imbalance in the tactical approach to the attacking side of our game. I recall years ago the Spuds had a similar problem when Ginola played for them, everything went through him and it became easy for the opposition to double up.

But the team has to be so reliant on him because with absolutely no support from anywhere else on the pitch we have to rely on our most skilful player to make things happen on his own and that's not down to the team thats down to bad management.A player like him should not be running around like a mad man chasing defenders and lost causes and he shouldn't be expected to take on entire defences to make things happen week in week out.If we didn't set up so so defensive every week and get the midfield up a bit there's no way we would be so reliant on him because he'd be getting help and support instead of when he receives the ball not having any help within 30 yards of him.He is completely and utterly wasted in a Roy Hodgson set up. In all fairness Zaha is one of the most gifted footballers any of us have seen at Palace. I'm tempted to say he has serious Tekkers but I don't use that type of language. We can hardly expect the rest of the team to be as skillful.
