When a club first gets promoted to the PL its fans are delirious with joy. For the next few seasons they are satisfied if their team avoids relegation. Staying up is an achievement in itself and one to be proud of. But as time goes by, complacency sets it. Mere survival is, as Danny Kelly puts it, the thinnest of gruel. It’s no longer sufficient to satisfy the appetite of the fans. Aspirations outstrip stretched finances as expectations soar. The fans turn on the manager and the Charlton Syndrome sets in. ‘He’s taken us as far as he can’, they cry. ‘Let’s ditch him for someone who can take us to the next level.’ They call for the man who showed promise when failing in his previous job or the recently retired player with little experience who is looking for his next stepping stone. In reality there is no sustainable ‘next level’. The best that can be achieved is the mere survival that the fans reject. The inexorable clamour to ‘push on’ ends in failure and the club returns to the ranks from which it came. Hope springs eternal of a swift return to the Premiership, so that the cycle can begin again. There was an excellent article, a few years ago, on the success of Sevilla in Spain. Their model was to accept they are mid-table, and to make sure they stayed there but went for the cups. We have fans who seems to think we should be challenging for Europe each year. It’s silly. We don’t have the money to do that year in year out. I’d settle for safety and a decent cup run every couple of years.
If you come to a fork in the road, take it. |

Claude Puel - top half finishes for Southampton and Leicester. Leicester sacked him when they were 12th FFS! Rafa Benitez - Champions League winner, need I say more! Suspect he's running down the clock on his contract so he can manage in a different country for £££ though Sean Dyche - not pretty, but he'd know what we need and keep us up each season

Fully agree and a good post. When we came up we laughed at other clubs fans as being too over demanding, thinking they were better than they were and that we wouldn't be like that. We prided ourselves on our togetherness and fully fledged support even though we were playing worse than we are now. Now we are no different. As soon as there is a poor result forums are littered with criticism. For years we bemoaned the lack of managerial stability, and now we have it every time something goes wrong Roy is past it or a doddling old man. I hope he stays with us for 2 to 3 years more. Who his replacement will be after that we just don't know now as we all know things, and who is the manager is in ascendancy in a few years time we simply do not know.

I have no desire to add to the “clamour “ for him to be replaced, which is what this exercise essentially is. When the day of his departure arrives I think we will struggle to find a man with a better track record at a bottom 14 club. The astonishing level of support on here for the likes of Wagner simply evidences the dearth of talent available. But I know my view will be increasingly a minority one as the cycle I’ve mentioned reaches its zenith and the mounting disenchantment with mere survival leads us back to the Championship.

I started this thread not to clamour for Roy's exit but because I was frustrated with people calling for Roy's head but not having what I considered a valid replacement. I was curious to gauge who people thought would actually be a viable option and their reasoning behind it. I personally would not be unhappy to see Roy as our manager next season but I also realize his limitations and that it is important to always stay one step ahead of the game. The industry is ever evolving and it is important to remain proactive rather than reactive which has sadly not been the case in the past. Your first post on this thread about fan expectations was excellent by the way.

Most of the disenchanted Palace fans I come across are not unhappy with our position but the way we have attained it. Understandably people would like some entertainment for their money, because surely that is important? It is the same reason Puel was unpopular at two different clubs despite decent results. It is the same reason Allardyce was unpopular at West Ham and Everton. Roy has done a good job of organising the team and ensuring we get enough points and I'm thankful for that and I am not clamouring for him to be replaced. However, at 71 time is not exactly on his side and so it is only prudent to be looking at the future, be it next season or the one after. As to Wagner, see what Huddersfield fans have to say and I think you'll find it hard to find many clubs with so few points that still support their manager.

Actually I would contend that the football would be worse under Dyche.
