How is it financial fair play if the top 6 clubs can buy whatever players they want, but no one below them is allowed to do it?

"Fair Play" would be forcing the same salary cap on all 20 teams, so City would be dumpster diving for free transfer bench players the same way that we are. Liverpool debates whether to buy Ronaldo or Messi, and we debate whether to buy a crippled 40 year old from Lyon, or a Torquay bench warmer, or the top goal scorer from the Eastern Macedonia League. Fair play!

Honestly, FFP is the biggest load of crap I've ever heard of, and I don't even understand what it's supposed to accomplish, other than to keep the bottom feeders from ever having a chance to get better.

Judging by the amount of money Foolem and Wolves have splashed this season it is at both ends of the league. We seem to be in the middle and being squeezed from both ends. If we cannot spend diddly this Jan due to FFP inevitably we may well be squeezed out of the league. Maybe we can get through this season without strengthening in ceetain areas this month (badly needed in my view) not sure in the future though. Add in the seeming inflated wage bill and the squeeze is even greater.

Nope I didn't think he did it solely for the love (not sure why you got the impression I did) that's why I asked the question. I have read previous comments where he stated he didn't take a wage but that obviously must have been in the past so I wasn't sure if his financial benefit was just the growth in the value of his shares or if he was salaried as well.

2.15 million salary plus around 500k going out to different companies he's director of along with repayment of a 6m loan, 250k interest on the loan.

This is back in 2017. I imagine his salary has only gone up.

A very interesting read, thanks Chris.

My pleasure.
My initial figure was well off to be fair. That website is fascinating, the authors are impressive (despite being Brighton)

I thought several bits of their analysis (especially around SP & the board) has been debunked by a few such as the Swiss Ramble as numbers were taken out of context or inadequate explanations given?

It might just have been the anti-weed backlash but there were points missing like the rent paid had to increase from ‘peppercorn’ to market rate because of hmrc. IIRC, the loan interest also dated back to when CPFC 2010 took over & put money in. No interest was charged until the U.S. investmentbcame in at which point the total due was paid (along with the loans themselves) over two years.

Trying to find other articles but here’s the Swiss’ twitter.

SP is certainly doing VERY well out of the job these days (unlike earlier years) but I don’t think he’s quite ‘fleecing’ the club as some might think.

I’m actually intrigued to know where the mooted £100m investment that was allegedly ring fenced for the stadium/infrastructure is hiding. I presume one of the holding co’s in Delaware.

Can’t find any way if digging out that info, then again, in Delaware you don’t even have to make directors names public.

if I'm not mistaken we were talking about players not directors??

Yeah. It's all smoke and mirrors

Incidentally the Palace accounts were analysed to death when they were eventually published
