I think the issues we've had progressing from perennial relegation strugglers have stemmed from arguably getting promoted too early. If you look at when we got promoted, it was largely down to an overachieving run in the autumn, and I would say the only really prem standard players were Zaha, Bolasie, Jedinak, Speroni and Murray (honorable mention to Delaney who worked hard enough to not look out of place in the prem - but equally didn't exactly shine in the champ). When you consider that Zaha and Murray weren't available for the first 6/12 months we have had to buy, not only almost a new first XI, but also replace those that were prem standard and left. I have seen recently that Palace have assembled something like the 15th most expensive squad in Europe, and with Bolasie and Zaha the only major player sales in that time, that has largely been funded by the owners and our first 2 overachieving seasons. I think there needs to be great caution in attempting to run before you can walk when it comes to running a football club because we can oh so easily end up in a right mess. I'd also point out that progressing from relegation strugglers to midtable mainstays sustain-ably for any club outside the top 7 (and previously clubs like villa) is extremely difficult. Even clubs such as Southampton and Swansea whose management have previously been highly praised - got promoted more gradually, had a certain identity, had real top quality players - have still ended up down near the bottom after a couple of years of "mid-table mediocrity". The way I see it is everyone outside the top 7 has a premier league lifespan of maximum 8-10 years and the length of this lifespan seems to be determined by how many good/bad decisions you make in a row which, incidentally, there doesn't seem to be much reason or pattern behind why they are good/bad. Parish seems to make a habit of alternating from good to bad and I don't think there are many others out there who could drastically improve on that (except of course for the hordes of captain hindsights who would have made every single correct decision ever). This is the best answer on here. We had only been out of administration for 3-4 years before we were promoted with as you say maybe only 6 genuine prem quality players in our squad. We now have a squad of much better players (if not a bit thin) and are generally forced to pay ridiculous prem prices for players such as Benteke. You just have to look at teams such as Villa, Sunderland, Fulham, Middlesbrough and Bolton to see that Parish isn't doing that badly really. One thing I would say is that Watford are putting together a nice squad for a smallish budget.

For a club of our size it has gone through the roof in the last few years. We now have at least 3 players on more than £100k a week - Benteke, Sakho and Wilf yet even Leicester have a max of £100k a week (Vardy and Mahrez) and teams like Burnley probably don't have anyone on more than say £50k. We now have an imbalance in the squad with people on big wages just not pulling their weight - Cabaye, Tekkers and Townsend spring immediately to mind. I blame him for this and less for transfers, as the transfer policy has to be mainly the manager's responsibility It isn't the manager who negotiates and deals. Roy will give the name of the players he wants to Parish, sometimes Freedman giving Roy the names first. The 'transfer policy' is not the manager's responsibility. He will meet with the chairman to discuss what the chairman agrees or provides that allows the transfer policy to be.

i would remain loyal to Parish. Look at the Newcastle chairman ( or some of da no-a-speak-a-da eeenglish chairmen but got tons of dodgy money and running away from amnesty international ) and be careful what you wish for. Edited by PalazioVecchio (12 Feb 2018 4.09pm) Whilst you have pretty much nailed it, the bold for me i feel isn't true. Sure, he bought us when no one seemingly could, but... it appears that he knew he was first in line realistically and waited until the the doomsday clock to move to the 11th hour before buying - fantastic business deal by a businessman, but not that of a fan. Running a sports business is way different to any other business - thing is, the bad that you have mentioned, it's pretty damning and not something we want to move forward with surely? Aslo, as a side note as others have said, we went up too early, but we did right in getting in Pulis. Now, that whole saga stinks, but, let's say the chairman put trust in Pulis, let him build his team his way, would he have walked? Probably not... he would have been happy and we could have slowly constructed a worthy squad. So, let's say Parish put the boot down on Pulis, which made Pulis upship and leave - the money we have spent since in new managers, paying them off, getting their players, with their wages etc, it could be argued that giving pulls that money he wanted could have been a cheaper out come and that mid table stability. Another predictable thread questioning Parish after a defeat. Since the Premier started up, we have had 4 Chairman. Noades, who knew his way round football, but ultimately stitched the club up, buy selling the team and not the ground. This stifled any possibility of progression, unless he got his cut. Goldberg, well meaning, more cash than football knowledge, he lost all his money to football sharks and led us into administration. Jordan, ego driven, no experience in football and thought he could change the system. Lied over owning the ground, coined the phrase " couldn't get the deal over the line". Couldn't progress the club and ultimately led to near extinction at the High Court and he employed Trevor Francis and Peter Taylor and ruined my Saturday afternoons watching the garbage they got the team playing. Parish, got us to the Premier after 3 seasons and remained there since. Has been honest in his dealings, bought the ground so therefore got us a proper club, not tenants. You can take your choice of who you think has done the better job of being Chairman, they all made mistakes, but some more devastating than others. Edited by Painter (12 Feb 2018 8.45pm)
