My experience only goes as back as far as John Burridge as a youngster.

But in that time, I would echo the sentiments about Matt Clarke. He was class, and such a shame his career was cut short by injury.

I think Chris Day was one of the poorer keepers I saw at Selhurst.

Chris Day is goalkeeping coach at Stevenage.

There is little point in comparing keepers of John Jackson's era with modern keepers.

In those days, the goalmouth was often a bog, the ball was heavier and keepers were fair game for the bustling all-arms and elbows barging tactics of contemporary centre forwards. They got little protection from referees and had to be courageous (it was often said at the time that all keepers must be mad)

I have watched videos of Jackson when he moved on to Leyton Orient and still wonder at the almost miraculous stops and saves he made. I also had the pleasure of watching Vic Rouse when he was capped for Wales in the old third division south.

Jackson and Johnny Byrne remain our best Palace players. It is a shame they were from a now far gone era (like me!)[/quote

Yeah, me too, its a shame that almost no records remain from those days, i bit with Jacko, but nothing of Byrne.
Well, at least we did get to see them and remember them

Quite Right Jacko would have dealt with muller

England did not have a couple of better keepers at the time of ‘Jacko’. If Sir Alf had picked him instead of bonetti for the 1970 world cup as number two to Banks, we would not have lost to West Germany, and that little s*** Gerd Mueller would have been smashed all over the penalty area!

John Jackson. Absolutely No.1. Then Nigel M. After that it doesn't matter too much. But John McCormick - the big guy! - is that you? Sorry if slightly off topic, but big John and Roger Hynd in front of Jacko...that was good.

So you’ve been watching Palace since the 1940s then!

The first match I saw was one of Bill Glazers last before transferring to Coventry. He made a huge impression on me,seemed like superman, always in flight somewhere over his defence. Of course Jacko came in to a cool reception(follow that) but soon became a massive hero, often singlehandedly keeping us in the game. These 2 keepers will always be my favorites,Kiraly and Speroni both deserve a place up there. Afraid I missed the Martyn years completely so not judging him

I don't recall Jimmy Glass ever playing for our first team.

He is best remembered for coming up for a corner in the dying embers of the game and scoring for Carlisle to keep them in the league.
