And the second one Hennessey should be on it of course someone is going to try and push the ball in the net at the second post with such a direction. It is simply not true about the near post theory. All keepers let goals in at their near post. If a player shoots hard from 6-10 yards then there is a good chance the keeper will not be able to react in time. A deflection (like last night) or through a group of players makes it almost unstoppable. The first goal was awful defending with no one tracking the run from Stephens.

Whether WH or JS plays - they will make the odd good save and make the odd mistake. People need to accept that.
We’re scoring goals though CPJ.

I might be wrong because I haven't seen a replay. But I thought when Stephens took the extra touch, he'd f****d it up, because hennessey only had to come forward a yard and spread himself and he'd have saved it.

To be fair the first goal got a very slight nick of the defender which made it look worse. But not a great game from Wayne. It went straight through him, deflection or not he should have it! He has to go now!

Speroni v Arsenal? No difference. Speroni was good when he was younger, Hennessey never even got near as good as Speroni used to be!! We need a new keeper, top priority......Carson looked half decent the other night...?

Living in the bubble of the PL millions we now think it is our god given right to consider going to the richest club on the continent and get their reserve keeper. I see a lot of lower league football and am convinced there are plenty of goalies good enough for us, Yet we , and most of the other top level clubs, lack a scouting system that can identify a quality lower league goalie. That I find surprising and maddening. Originally posted by merganser
Hennessy commanded his area and was alert throughout, making some decent saves. Every time he concedes a goal, he is made a scapegoat for the whole defence. I wouldn’t say there are more than half-a-dozen better keepers in the premier League than him and Speroni. Can any of their critics identify affordable replacements?

I'd agree with this - all, more than any other position on the pitch (IMHO) it's a confidence thing - look at how useless Hart currently is, compared to how good he was a couple of years back. Therefore actively scouting someone else's reserve keeper - who is likely to be low on confidence, I think is a mistake. WH was languishing in the reserves when we got him, as was McCarthy. We should aim higher & take a punt on "the next JS". It might not work - a la SM - but at least it isn't "same old, same old"

Edited by DutchEagleJohan (09 Jan 2018 12.17pm) For sure Johnstone from Villa and Archer even though he plays for Milwall have showed some real quality and could be ready for the big step and both of them are relatively young and I would also add Maxwell (Preston) and George Long (Wimbledon on loan from Sheffield) who will surely become a top keeper. After there are a few good keepers all around europe like Scufett from Udinese, Paul Bernadoni from Clermont or Sergio Herrera from Osasuna...

Papa was too wide, Delaney too central and Cabaye was slow in protecting the back line. Perhaps Wayne may have got his arm out a little quicker but the ball was hit from a relatively close to the goal and at speed. not,in my humble opinion just a classic case of a goal keeper being nearly beaten at his near post.Neither of our current goal keepers are the answer.
God, it makes me so angry....I am gonna find a little bloke... I'm gonna have a fight! |
