His main concern was keeping his job, not improving anyone else's life.

The chancellor's incompetence is mind-blowing.

Surely he will have checked what the result of such a tax reduction would be and have been advised it was of very little use.

For those of us at work, have we got to the real important issue yet? How much extra do I have to pay for a litre of gin?

If we sent back every foreigner that has committed a crime, does not work or pay taxes and those that are illegal immigrants we would not have a housing shortage.

Making use off circa 600000 empty properties would be a start.

Why is our productivity so poor?

This is a historical problem.

You keep trotting that out but people own those homes.

They are entitled to do what they want with them.

Does keeping homes empty help the housing crisis?

A fair few, the owners have died...

That's the 64 thousand lire question.

This sounds like an administrative problem.
Someone privately owns those houses or the government does.

To an extent yes, but property is also an asset so you need some tax on its gains. Transaction taxes are inefficient though.

A land value tax would be effective and productive.

Supply needs to be stimulated where the market fails to produce sufficient homes and homes of sufficient quality.

Regulation is also needed to ensure standards are kept and development is environmentally friendly.

There is only a gain if and when you sell it, it's market value isn't a gain even if it's more than you paid for it . A car is also an asset but you don't pay CGT on that if it appreciates, amongst other things.

Duty was frozen, so not much (about a quid). Only tramps that drink super strength cider have to pay more duty.

Surely he can't get away with such a concept that is rebuttled so easily. Literally as basic as you can get.
