This is a tragedy however we do not know the full details yet so it is possible that the woman was at fault. Assuming that it was the Uber car that failed that should not stop the development of this technology. Driverless cars have the potential to reduce road accidents. Every year thousands of people around the world die yet know one is suggesting cars should be banned. Every new technology brings risk hopefully from this tragedy lessons will be learned. When a drunk driver kills someone we cannot say it will never happen again as you cannot program people. In theory however they should be able to fix this particular problem so it never happens again.

This is actually the first death where an autonomous vehicle has been involved. In the time they've been on the roads testing they've covered millions of miles and 10,000's of thousands have died in the States alone due to human drivers during that same period. initial indications are that the woman gave the car no chance to stop in time, whether controlled by a human or an algorithm. Pedestrians also have a part to play in road safety as well...just look at the amount of people who walk into the street looking at their phones. Edited by Lyons550 (20 Mar 2018 11.53am)

It is inevitable, it's just a matter of when not if. However, some think tanks have suggested (counter intuitively) that traffic is likely to get worse not better in the first instance. partly due to the mixture of human vs autonomous cars on the road, partly to do with other factors. Once car ownership becomes less of a social 'requirement' and we shift towards an autonomous community model, with all cars talking to themselves and therefore optimising the entire traffic flow/movement in big cities then it might get better. On safety and the naysayers – accidents will reduce dramatically, and that is obviously a good thing, but it is surely impossible to create a system with millions of 1 ton objects moving at 30mph+ in public spaces without incidents and fatalities.

I wouldn't be so sure. Why was a self driving car going over the speed limit? Surely that should be impossible. The car, which was traveling at 38 mph in a 35 mph zone when the accident occurred Sunday night, made no attempt to brake and the driver has said: "His first alert to the collision was the sound of the collision." Surely his job is to be looking out for things like this that the AI won't be looking for, isn't that the whole point of testing? To find out what intelligence it is lacking, such as potential hazards. I don't know as I'm too old, but I presume you'd have to point that out as a hazard on the theory test in the UK.

They'll find out the reason, it's tooled up to the eyeballs with cameras and diagnostic equipment so they'll get to the bottom of it.

They already know, probably in HD with stereo sound and slow motion. I hope there is/was a camera monitoring the "driver" as I've got an inkling that they probably weren't paying as much attention as an actual driver would need to.
