Therefore why not let them go ahead and just ignore the outcome. Using force to try to prevent the vote seems totally pointless and just rings of Spain of 40 + years ago. Really unbelievable! Hopefully the EU can have some influence here. What have they done.

Truly is abhorrent to see the fascist salutes from those Spanish people in that clip. Have read the tweets after also which gives more insight as well as that other link of that blog you shared a few posts back. Thanks nickgusset. This violent action by the Spanish authorities and the fascist salutes from those Neanderthals will only make the Catalans strive for Independence even more now I reckon.

Could you maybe explain it to pefwin?

Both sides (politicians) have got this so so wrong, for so long now, today was always going to end badly. The Catalan government have used the elderly and kids as shields and the Spanish government (Guardia Civil & The different police forces even had it out with the mossos (Catalan police who I detest) and the fire brigade, both of whom were protecting the public. As for the Catalan government they are just as corrupt and lie as much as Madrid, I phoned my local MP on Friday asking where as a resident I can vote, he told me phone the Generalitat (Catalan government), they said they did not know if I could, I also tried the Municipal association of independence, again they could not tell me, basically the vote was for Catalans not it's residents. I have been living here 19 years, have bought property, paid taxes (a lot) bought up a child here (Catalan/Spanish/English speaking), I deserved the right to vote as well. This is going to get a lot worse before it gets better, national strike being called for here on the 3rd October.

Nationalists v Nationalists. The logic behind Spain's position on internal regions, Gibraltar and Melilla and Cueta has always been unsustainable. As a resident, do you think this is a (re)start of a resistance? A Catalan and Basque autumn rather than an Arab spring?

Until they get a right to vote from central government, and not just carry one out because they want to, it can't be deemed legal in any way. Even the Catalan leader, I think it was, said he couldn't vote where he was supposed to as the police had closed it, so he voted somewhere else. That doesn't sound like an election that isn't prone to illegal voting or voting errors. And then it's a matter for all of Spain to vote on, not just Catalonia.
