The hatred of Benteke is amazing. I normally agree with a lot you say DM, but Benteke has had a couple more chances which, although well saved by the keepers, he really could have been more ruthless with. One in particular, when he shot low at the keeper in the six yard box. Of course it's ridiculous to 'hate' him. But there is a distinct lack of courage in his game. I noticed it at Liverpol and I can see it here. I watched Shane Long closely last week and was impressed by his constant niggling and outright unsporting behaviour. In fact it wasn't until the 77th minute that the referee managed to properly notice what he was up to. It's not pretty and may offend people who love the beautiful game but it's effective. Yes, with good service and support CB is a top striker and can be very productive, but until those areas are properly addressed then needs must and we need a bit of Shane Long from him.

This is the same team that kept us up last year, the same striker that scored 17 goals, but no, it's Hennessey's fault, oh no it's Puncheon, no Ward, oh actually it's Benteke, and so the list will go on. We really are the true Nigel's of the footballing world and rightly called so. What nonsense. If a player is working hard then we will acknowledge that and give credit where due even if he doesn't happen to be a superstar - see Campbell. But Puncheon and Benteke are being called out not for their natural talent but for their work rate, which in both cases has been pi** poor this season.

I heard it was Everton that refused to pay that fee. As for Tosen, we're we really in for him? I doubt it, as the money was ring fenced for Sakho. Edited by Dangermouse (23 Sep 2017 10.35pm) Everton were looking for a striker themselves, nothing came off so worked out well for them, unfortunately not for us. Sako will get the nod in my opinion with one of the youngsters in reserve. Judging by SP radio interview can't see us getting a free agent in. Another below par player on the wage bill is probably not what we want.

He was despised on here. Benteke doesn't play like Shane Long and Shane Long doesn't score as many goals as Benteke, but he works hard, well done. So does Cameron Jerome.

SP is already thinking about cutting the wage bill because he has got us relegated already!

So does Cameron Jerome. As was pointed out above, players who are despised on here are not always despised with good reason. Anyone who didn't like Campbell should go and watch the match at Anfield last season where he swapped places with Tomkins who was injured and worked his socks off to help close the game out. Can you imagine Benteke doing that? Puncheon does plenty of standing about pointing and gesticulating. I suppose you could call that work. Observe the words "this season" in my post. Both of them have done the business in the past so we know they can. That's what's infuriating.

If he's out for a while what will we miss? Will we miss his goals .. oh wait he hasn't scored. Will we miss his incisive runs into the box .. oh wait he doesn't make any. Will we miss tackling back to help the defence .. oh wait he doesn't do that. Will we miss him making decoy runs to create space for others .. oh wait he doesn't do that. Can't say he'll be missed on current form.

This is what happens when you don't spend enough money to get quality cover(any cover) for key positions and leave everything to the last minute. Well done everyone.

What's done is done and we all raised concerns about the lack of a backup striker when the window closed and going over it again won't achieve anything. Rather than throw someone else into the number 9 role perhaps we can try something different next week by pushing Loftus-Cheek further up and having one of the youngsters sniffing around him. We can't do any worse and even if we are unlikely to beat Manchester United it would be nice to just score a goal

Can't say he'll be missed on current form. But the "current form" extends to the whole team. Even our two loanees, who are both clearly talented, have their moments. Loftus-Cheek has been guilty of not sticking away some that looked easier to score and Owusu-Mensah has been part of some pretty ropey defences. It's unfair and unreasonable to single out individuals for blame when, for whatever reason, the whole team, maybe the whole setup, is failing. As already pointed out, these are players that have done it well for us before and can do so again. It's the bigger picture that needs to be looked at.
Bexley Dave Can you hear the Brighton sing? I can't hear a ******* thing! "The most arrogant, obnoxious bunch of deluded little sun tanned, loafer wearing mummy's boys I've ever had the misfortune of having to listen to" (Burnley forum) |

When confidence goes everything goes. Football becomes difficult and players start to overthink things. They react slower because of this and become reactive rather than proactive. This makes them look off the pace and laboured and it's then a vicious circle. Until the first goal we looked ok and even played some nice stuff, but once it went in the confidence flooded out and we then looked decidedly ropey. Players take too long to make decisions and generally try to play it safe and some stop showing for the ball. Abusing one man is just dumb, but that's the best fans in the league for ya.
