His mistake was not recognising that and not updating his plan. but then - maybe he recognised that it takes more time to Change, and soon they will adapt. Edited by CrazyBadger (07 Sep 2017 2.46pm)

FDB knew the squad when appointed. Much as we might have wished for more, we still signed 4 players this window. Unless he thought he'd be able to get 7 or 8 in, which might have made 3-4-3 viable, FDB is still to blame for persisting in an unsuitable formation. Could have stuck with 4-3-3 variant, but just impressed on players positivity of passing. Then switched formation when players a bit more comfortable for way of playing

Edited by CrazyBadger (07 Sep 2017 2.46pm) I think he made the call before even assessing the squad and was (in secret) hell bent on 3-4-3 wherever he managed in the prem. If we knew (actually me and Bexleydave and a few others) it'd be more likely to fall on its & rse then Sammy Lee certainly knew. Whether the mistake is not updating his plan or what not, it's Frank's responsibility and shoulders it falls on. That doesn't mean to say I want him out. I'd rather he played to our strengths, gets 6 in the next 2 and a result or 2 out of ManC, Manu and Chelsea, then when we're at full strength get some pass and move going a bit more, with 3 at the back on the back burner for a while, ready to unleash without 3 months of notice like West Ham did to us last season.

I do not think that is harsh at all! Is it too much to ask from a new manager to properly look the games of last season(s) back? That should have told him a few things about amongst other Puncheon, Milo, Tekkers and Ward as a potential wing back, should it not? Originally posted by CrazyBadger

Our players are more than capable of playing a short pass and move style, its just the tactic that was wrong. Look at our players, a PVA grew up in the culture of pass and move, milo would've played that game in Greece no doubt, Cabaye, of course, Zaha one of the best wingers in British football should be able to, Townsend certainly did at spurs, Benteke does whenever he comes on for Belgium and did at Liverpool, Dann did for Blackburn, they weren't that direct, schlupp played a quick direct game admittedly at Leicester but even they play it on the ground because Vardy and Okosaki, whatever his name is, are short asses. Most of our side have played pass and move or are capable. The issue has been the formation and not utilizing the only striker we have in the best way possible, Benteke is a target man predominantly.

Going back to topic title, perhaps the conference was delayed as the game is sunday not Saturday? Saying that I always thought these conferences of ours were held on a Friday anyway, no?

The issue is as Sam Allardyce said yesterday. Almost word for word: 'It has nothing to do with systems and formations, they are creating enough chances but not putting them away. But the real issue is individually and collectively they are not defending correctly'

We saw it at the end of Pardew's reign and the beginning on Sam's. Remember the 0-4 drubbing to a truly awful Sunderland team? The Delaney moment pretending to be asleep on the bench at Swansea wasn't great but for the most part we were being beaten narrowly, often late in the game, due to poor fitness /subs/concentration. Last four games beat Soton, drew Hull lost narrowly at home to United and Chelsea. The Sunderland game was a bit freakish really on the back of a good win at Bournemouth and hinged on some weak goalkeeping for the first goal and two mental minutes at the end of the first half. Always had a bit of hope that Sam would make us hard to beat although after the game at West Ham I looked at players leaving the pitch and thought we were gone then to be honest.

I'm a big critic but I appreciate there are more games needed (1 or 2 perhaps or game by game for a bit) for various reasons, analysis and decisions. Part of the audience now. Demand constant entertainment, enjoyment, fulfilment, drama, where they can't create their own. The other demand is a statement from parish. To say what? 'It's been sh1t but I'm putting full faith in Frank unless it's shyte and then he'll be sacked.' He's said the obvious already.

Problem is I can imagine a (very unlikely) situation where things turn around & we go on a run beating everyone & by the time we've beaten the entire top 6 at theirs the crowd are still booing. FdB stands in the middle of the emirates pitch & shouts "are you not entertained?!" Full on Gladiator style
