In response do Brentmaster, I did mention earlier my despair (suggesting perhaps some irrationality), but a manager trying to change the DNA of a club which barely survived due to loaning a world class CB and playing to its strengths (or 'DNA') by employing tactics almost directly against this, without that player and relying on us apparently signing a number of players in the next 10 days with no real evidence of that happening doesn't really help. Still very concerned Do you not think that the reason hes trying to change thd DNA is so that we don't just struggle to stay up each year..

Would like to highlight that my original point if you read properly or to be fair maybe misinterpreted, was to ask if anyone had any positives for me as believe it or not I will still drink out of my selhurst mug at work, attend all home and some away games and keep the home shirt hanging from my wall at home. I just feel as though the situation is pretty dire currently, I struggle to see where the optimism or hope can be justified (thin, non PL quality squad with a lack of transfer activity, bizarre tactics etc.) I thought maybe I hadn't taken something into consideration. The problem with your original point is that it both miss-quotes SP and takes it out of the context in which it was made. I would politely suggest you actually listen to the podcast of that show for what was actually said before starting such a negative thread (especially when there are already plenty to choose from).
Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five! |

Sam left us, we didn't kick him out because Parish wanted him to stay, our new manager has been brought in to work and encourage the youngters and bring them through because he has an excellant record with them, the manager before Sam was also changing the way we play just as now but the club had to step in with sam to rescue what they perceived as relegation, nobody will ever be able to prove whether we would have gone down with the manager before Sam. Well that is kind of obvious , but if in trying he actually takes us down , well that is not progress, It very simple and very obvious , play to the strengths of the players that we have , get the points required to stay up , then tinker , then we will have more money to get better players, then play to the players you have strengths , get enough points , stay up tinker some more more , and repeat until we have players good enough to play possession football and stay up with no worries. Although I for one do not give a monkeys about possession football , I want to see football that wins us games.

Possession football just means being in control, meaning we used to wait for mistakes in order to attack, but to cut down on the mistakes we make while attempting to play possession football now means we need to buy ready made and expensive players like Sakho to achieve it, Pardew had this problem and he ran out of time very sadly, it is going to be interesting to see how Frank copes going one step better.

Possession football means nothing if you do not do anything with the ball.

We didn't attempt Possession football with Liverpool and we did enough anyway with the ball against them to get a result and even more so against Huddersfield, making mistakes with possession football in that first game could only be reasonably successful with a few mistakes here and there, we made tons of them and then we failed miserably with our own great opportunities in front of their goal, against Liverpool we reduced our mistakes sufficiently enough to just miss out on a draw.

When people talk about 'possession football' they are confusing two ideas - we may not play tika taka but we should be able to keep hold of the ball when we need to either defensively or offensively - it's a sign of the team's quality, and it's not about individual players but how they interact with each other. To cheer up the OP just has to look at the squad - I was alarmed with some of FDB's decisions v Hudds and like the majority pleasantly surprised with the defensive solidity and return to our comfort zone v Liverpool, but a half decent manager should be able to get a tune from our front three with Kai Kai as back up, Luka, Yoyo, Jimmy Mac and RLC - 3 from 4 in the middle, and Fosu Mensah, Dann, Tomkins PVA and Schlupp to choose from at the back - with Ward, Souare and Riedewald as back up - more firepower up front (winger or striker)and a RWB (and a keeper) and we'll have all the squad depth we need, esp when Wickham;s fit again. Hopefully we can shift the deadwood (Punch, Ward, Lee, Mutch, Sako). Far too much pessimism - some of it well-founded but it's very early days and the window will be open plenty long enough.
