Agreed it was a fluid system, and as you say more like 5311,with Townsend trying to get up top with Christian. yep, Dann got the winner at Liverpool season before last and has put a few goals away in the PL. He's a good poacher late in the game, especially with his head.

yes, it all sounds very promising, but sadly that will not save us, we only had one shot on target yesterday out of three, our passing success was just 66% and we won just 50% of tackles and possession was 28% our pass total was 275 versus Liverpool 712 so we have big gap to up our game to the standard required for this league! And yet we only lost 1 0 against Liverpool at anfield. ..must have done something right. Edited by spartakev2 (20 Aug 2017 10.25am)

An improvement on the Huddersfield performance, yes....although there was only one way to go after that. I think we have beaten better Liverpool teams than yesterdays. It reminded me of how we played and lost narrowly to Chelsea and Man Utd last season under Pardew. Positives to be had for sure, but individual errors at both ends costing us.

From what I've seen and heard we played just like an Alladyce side, packed the middle, sat deep and countered. So FdB can be pragmatic and play the good old English way if needed. In fact Liverpool had their best spell when we chased the game and left gaps in behind. So we can only guess what might of happened had we been open from the start. The players are getting a lot of stick as being too stupid to play any way but the Pulis/Alladyce way, which is pretty disrespectful IMO.

I'm definitely a bit more convinced after that. I was afraid we'd be clueless and confused against a much better side and they would tank us, or that we would try to play ticky tacky football in their own half. Now we do need to keep the ball better and create more coming forward so get well soon Wilf. However, as you say we could play the "respect the point" mentality in the three-at-the back system and we were dropping one wing back back when the other went forward to make four across the back and were reasonably comfortable reshaping ourselves like that. Low possession figures though are something that might make a manager like de Boer nervous. Allardyce was spot on about that though. It's what you do with it that matters.

FdB has said a few times that if you can't have/dominate the ball then you need to make your opponent go where you want (or something like that). A vast amount of the possession conceded was 40+ yards from our goal so, maybe, that's part of the plan for playing the bigger teams.
Will this be five? It's gonna be five! It IS five! |
